Well-being and Mentoring
Boarding communities offer the perfect opportunity to proactively help students address issues relating to emotional and physical well-being before they occur. Providing students with the knowledge and tools to manage their own well-being and move towards a solution-focused mindset was the conceptual framework for Thrive, TASIS England's Well-being and Mentoring program for boarders. The Thrive program allows each student to work one-to-one with an appointed mentor from the boarding staff team. They meet at least every two weeks for student-led discussions around emotional and social development and life skills, from building resilience, dealing with stress and healthy boundary-setting, to learning about personal budgeting and setting goals.
Now approaching its fourth iteration, with adaptations and improvements made in response to annual surveys and the findings of an action research report, our initial model continues to develop. We originally had a 35-week program of set topics ranging from life skills such as basic cooking lessons, goal setting, and personal budgeting to social and emotional development conversations such as building resilience, healthy boundaries, and stress management. We chose mentoring as the means of delivery as an evidence-based method for providing guidance and support.
