As a boarding school, House identity and pride is a core tenet of our philosophy. Competition and teamwork help to foster and consolidate relationships quickly within groups of students, give students a greater sense of working collaboratively, and teach resilience throughout.
To embed and engender this, TASIS England has created Compete. The Compete program structures four competitive activities throughout the year, where boarding houses create teams to represent their house against others. Whilst traditionally, boarding houses would usually compete in sports, the Compete program appeals to other abilities in the boarding houses. Whilst sports are not entirely excluded from the program, the abilities we wish to celebrate within our boarding houses are diverse. Similarly, in TASIS England, we run a horizontal house system, where the students in one house may be from Grades 8 or 9, and in another from Grades 11 or 12. In order to account for this disparity in age and physical ability, we have implemented activities that do not rely solely on physical ability and experience within a given sport.
In the 2024-25 academic year, Compete saw a competitive Easter Egg Hunt, Esports, Tug-of-War, and Quiz Night. In the 2025-25 academic year, we will start the year with a full day of activities aimed at building relationships through various teamwork activities. Seeing the enthusiasm with which students approach these activities fills staff and students alike with excitement.
