Exam Disability Provisions

School Based Provisions

If your child has a significant difficulty with writing, reading, concentration, anxiety, learning or has a physical or medical disability, then they may be a candidate for disability provisions in examinations. Disability provisions allow students with a disability to complete exams on the same basis as students without a disability. Depending on the level of impairment, one or more provisions may be required. In order to ensure that appropriate provisions are put in place documentation will be needed to support students  inclusion. This may be from a psychologist, G.P, allied health professional or medical specialist

Disability Provisions may include: readers, writers, extra time to read/write, rest breaks, permission to move, permission to drink and eat, separate supervision, hearing or vision aides and the use of augmentative equipment.

In Years 7-11 the college determines what provisions are appropriate to enable your child to participate in school examinations. This is usually based the medical evidence supplied and what the College believes the student will be entitled to in the HSC.

During a students HSC year, applications for provisions in examinations must be made through NESA. If the student has used provisions in the past or if the need arises an application will be made to the NESA for Disability Provisions in the Higher School Certificate Examinations, when a student enters Year 12

NESA HSC Provisions

Disability provisions in the HSC are practical arrangements designed to help students who couldn't otherwise make a fair attempt to show what they know in an exam room.

The provisions granted are solely determined by how the student’s exam performance is affected.

Schools are responsible for determining and approving adjustments for all school-based assessment tasks. NESA determines disability provisions for the Higher School Certificate examinations.

To apply for provisions, schools must submit an online application to NESA. This application tells NESA which provision/s a student is requesting and includes recent evidence. Evidence may include medical reports, reading results, spelling results, writing samples and teacher comments.
