Marist Catholic College North Shore

Diverse Learning - LaValla Campus

The aim of the Diverse Learning department is to provide a caring, supportive environment for students with additional needs. The College is committed to the development of the whole person and to foster the dignity, self-esteem and integrity of each person.

The Diverse Learning department works with teaching staff to build their capacity in implementing effective teaching strategies and adjustments which address the diverse learning needs of all students. The collaborative planning process allows the Diverse Learning department to collaborate with the broader school community to facilitate successful educational outcomes for students with diverse learning needs through the development of knowledge, understanding and skills commensurate with high expectations.

Whilst classroom teachers have the responsibility of catering for the learning needs of all students within an inclusive education construct; the Diverse Learning department has the specific responsibility of assisting to facilitate positive educational outcomes for students with additional needs in collaboration with key stakeholders (ie. parents/guardians, specialists, teachers and students). The goal is to provide the necessary adjustments to fully integrate all students into the classroom and to assist them to access the curriculum.

The Learning Support Centre is a quiet space for students to work with the Diverse Learning Teachers or Learning Support Officers (LSO). The Centre offers support to individual students or small groups of students and provides access to resources and equipment. Students are encouraged to use the Centre if they need support in completing homework, classwork, assessments or a quiet space to take time out from the business of the College playground.
