Coil Technique

Coil And Carve

Artist Statement: I was unable to finish this project as of right now, I made a small cup and put underglaze on it, I missed a class or two, and eventually kind of just moved on without carving. I wish I had finished this project because I think the end result would have been super cool on the small cup I made. For the cup, I used small hand-made coils and a circle base that was maybe 3-in in diameter.

Historical Coil Pot

I will Add morephotos when glaze fired

Artist Statement: I enjoyed this project a lot and I put lots of effort into making my pot. I think I should have taken more photos during the time I was making this, I often forget to take them during class.

I used the press to make big coils and stacked them up going outwards, I tried to turn them inwards as I build up more but it didn't really work, one problem I ran into was at the start of making my pot, I didn't slip and score the bottom of my first coil to the bottom of the pot, when I was putting final touches on the pot the bottom detached. Luckily Mr. A helped me get it back together and you can barely even tell it happened.

Overall I am happy with my final product, my pot is very very smooth and you cant even tell it was made from coils. There are a lot of things I like about my pot but that doesn't mean that there aren't some things that I wouldn't do differently if I were to do this again. First, I would definitely try to complete it in a shorter amount of time, by the time I finished with my pot and was ready to fire it the clay had become extremely dry, which is part of the reason that the bottom fell off. Second, I would start with more clay, in this project and in many others I have seriously underestimated the amount of clay I needed to complete them.
