Artist Statement:

I worked for a while on coming up with the ideas to form this piece of art.  I knew that I wanted a basic background of trees, and a moon or sun. Then after a little more thinking, the idea popped into my head that I should make a sunflower field background around the sunflower. I just wanted to show the size of the mega-mutant type sunflower in scale to other sunflowers. And at one point I caught the idea that I should make a moon in the top right corner instead of a sun, which I wanted to make people think it was like a wear-wolf flower that comes out on the full moon. Although this idea didn't end up working out at all. In the end, I  just creating a sun/blood moon type thing. I'm fine with people interperting it either way.

I used a basic graphite pencil, some colored pencils, and a highlighter to create my artwork. I first created all the artwork with the regular pencil, drawings, depth, and shading. The color pencils were just for coloring things the correct colors. But I used the highlighter in the drawing to get it to really catch the eye of people.

I chose to make a tree background because I thought it would create a realisticness to the seen, because many open fields of sunflowers have woods behind them. And I made the giant sunflower directly in the middle of the field of smaller ones just to emphasize that this was almost like the king of all the sunflowers. Thus my title, King of the Sunflowers.
