Charlie Sculpture
Newsprint, Tape, Wire, Tissue Paper, & Dog Food Bag
Artist Statement:
What I wanted to do for this sculpture was do something that included simple shapes, that would also still be unique. My idea landed on my dog Charlie who is a dachshund so I thought it would be kind of funny if it was also lifesized, which it ended up being. My other two ideas were a fish, specifically a golden salmon, and a starfish, although I ended up finally deciding on Charlie. I knew from the start that I was going to make all the main shapes separate, such as the body and tail, and then put them all together using wire. As for what I was going to do next, I had no idea.
The materials I used for this sculpture were: paper, tape, wire, blue tissue paper, hot glue, and Charlie's dog food bag. All on top of each other in layers to make this amazing sculpture.
I started by making the assemblage, just using paper, tape, and wire. I packed the paper down firmly and secured it with many layers of tape. Once I had all the main parts, I put them together using wire, hot glue, and even more tape. It actually ended up standing pretty well and was a good secure base to start with. I then added a few thin layers of blue tissue paper on top of the tape layer because Emma explained that it would help the dog food bag stick better on top, and she was right. I then spend many hours hot gluing cut-up pieces of the dog food bag up, and then hot gluing them down firmly. I only stopped until every inch was covered, and I had almost used up the whole bag. In the end, it was generally fun to make this sculpture, it was really hands-on and I had never done anything like it, and in the end, I thought the final product turned out great.
