Artist Statement:
For this assignment I had no real ideas in mind, and I think I remember hearing an owl outside. I had drawn one before for a different assignment, and I just thought why not do another one? After all, they are one of my favorite animals. I decided to draw a basic sketch of a Barred Owl sitting on a branch under the moon, and then kind of freestyle the Sgraffito Clay. I really just wanted to make adjustments as I went through it as you can probably tell, because these drawings do have the same components, but they most definitely differentiate.
For the materials I used white colored pencil for the sketch, and I used scraper tools to cut into the clay for the Sgraffito. I then put a glaze on it to make it more shiny and durable
For the clay carving I just kind of wanted to go with the flow. I changed many things about the drawing in the end, and I adapted to what I had. For example I had finished the owl and the branch, and I thought it looked pretty good. I really wanted to my best on this though so I decided to add shadow and 3d affect to the moon, add ink and then scrape it off until the lines were even, and finally added a background with carving leaf-like shapes all over. In the end this could've been up there for one of the most fun, and best drawings i've made, and i'm really happy with how it turned out.
