Forensics Project

For this project, we played a sort of detective role where we solved a case using different methods of DNA tracing to pinpoint the criminal. We used different techniques such as fingerprinting, gel electrophoresis, analysing pen ink, pedigree charts, and DNA analysis. We then used deductive thinking to come to a conclusion on the murder of Carleton Comet. Our first steps were to compile all of this evidence and put the pieces together into a google slides attached below.

To build our case we used evidence from the following labs. Below is the gel electrophoresis lab.

The color is seperated and the rows that match completely are the matches to the ones found at the crime scene. For this test Nancy Normal matches with CS1 evidence and Sam Sophomore matches with CS2 evidence.

We also used DNA analysis where we placed solvent A or B into the DNA to seperate it. If the DNA clumped with the corresponding solvent, it meant it was a certain blood type. If it didn't it was type O blood. We matched the blood of the suspects to the crime scene DNA to find that it was Nancy Normal's DNA at the scene.

Key Terms:

  • DNA evidence: evidence that can be traced to a person such as blood, hair, or other bodily fluids

  • Fingerprinting: the use of fingerprint analysis to match a fingerprint to a person through the use of comparing the arches and shape of the fingerprint.

  • Pedigree Charts: charts that display the family tree along with the gender and diseases of the offspring.

Refection:

I believe this project went really well. My group all worked together for the most part and I had a lot of fun with this project. It was very fun to solve the case and to put all the pieces of the puzzle together until we got a case. If my group was to do one thing better, it would be to tone it down on making the presentation funny in compromise for actual content but overall, I made a very good presentation even if it was lacking in some parts.
