Our topic for "Solve a world problem" are Car accidents and how we can help reduce the damages to the car and most importantly passengers.
Here is our finial presentation:
My partner and I decided to choose Car accidents as our world problem since is a very common problem throughout the world. When we started our research we decided that we should first start off with looking up what is the main cause of car fatalities. After making a list of common fatalities that lead to car crashes we started to find a few solutions that can help reduce more then one fatalities that occur. For example, Alter airbags, SOS button, emergency release seat belts, and lastly mandatory breath allizor. After doing more research and looking at recent data tables and graphs we decided to choose altering airbags.
Our solution to our world problem would be altering car air bags. What we mean by this is instead of just having air bags on the outside of a car we will be adding pop up air bags to the outer part of the car. Our idea is to have air bags pop out of the front of the car so it decreases the impact of kinetic energy. Though we have thought about the idea of having the outer air bags be on every side of the car we though about being realistic and install the air bags to the rear and front of the car. So in case of an crash and our airbags will be used the passenger wouldn't feel totally suffocated.
Finally, my partner went of a website and created a 3D model of our idea for the first time. Though it was a bit challenging we pulled through but in the end didn't think it was good enough and decided not to put it in which was a mistake. Since it would have made it easier for our listeners to visulize our idea and how it can be successful in solving a World Problem. Overall, the research jotted down really help and especially looking up graphs biggest year of drunk driver, most popular nationwide crashes into types of onjects and more. This helped us in planning and resonable decisaion making.
Here is a of the graphs of many we used:
Plan (selecting a promising solution)-
Sharing our ideas with others so our outer front airbags will be able to be installed in cars so we can make a change.
Create ( build a prototype)-
The cost for our idea will be very expensive because it's a big problem. We need the money in a lot of different angles of this prototype. For example, pitching our ideas to the world (signs) and building our main prototype in general cost a lot. So we will need funding for this plan.
Ask: Identify the need of constraints- After brainstorming and eliminated our other top twp choices and decided that car accidents would be our main focus.
Research the problem:
We spend two days researching, writing down, examining graphs that go in depth of the main cause on car accidents. We also went into a bit of day 3 of our project still doing research because we forgot to inspect more graphs.
Develop solutions: Organizing our research we saw that there were many reason why car accidents happen and that there is no main reason but many different causes. We thought of trying to fix solutions that did not work in the pass but had a higher potential then it ended with. We looked at fixing the air bags but we knew that they already have been worked on for years and that there wouldn't be much trying to take a stab at it. So we decided that instead of focusing on airbags that have been close to perfect from the inside we would fix the airbags that aren't perfect from the outsides.
Test and evaluate prototype- We looked at our problem from many different perspectives and asked other what they thought was more realistic and got feedback. My partner and I thought about what locations would be best to install and outside airbag in.
Improve ( Redesign as needed)-
Instead of adding airbags on every side of the car, we decided that we would add the airbags to the front that lead a bit into the sides of the car( due to our research).
Reflection: During this project on of my strengths that came out for once was being a leader. This project we dealt with a lot of bad time management, getting off task, and not knowing what to do when we got stuck. I felt as if I did I pulled my partner and I out of that hole many times, and that I did a reasonably good job at it. Communication was our greatest strength we experienced during this project. We had to work on a world problem that is so grand, one that is still being worked on to this day, This made us have to really think out of the box and communicate with each other, and to be comfortable sharing our ideas. It took a lot of identifying to justify why our solution would be the best there had already been a similar prototype that existed. Next project I can stay like this by staying self aware and social.
Surprisingly, the weakness I have mastered at with group project is communication. But with this project that weakness did not show, instead this time what I struggled with the most is commitment. Since I was partners with a friend that I get a long with I had no trouble sharing my ideas but when it came to commiting to my work I struggled. I was not dedicated right off the bat, which I feel pushed me on the wrong path. I also struggled with my conscientious learning in the form of time management. I found myself rushing to get the final pieces edited because I was not consious about my time managment. Next project I can improve by connecting with a project and to learn to take interest in all my projects topic, and setting goals to better manage my time.
