Build a Band project is where we were assigned to a group based on the spectrum of music you listen to the most. Your group will then build three instruments. A wind instrument, a string instrument, and lastly a percussion instrument.
I choose to build a pan flute ( a wind instrument) .
Final product:
How it works:
The pan flute works when you blow air down each pipe one at a time, this creates vibration which creates the sound you can hear. With no mouth piece for this wind instrument you have to direct your air at an angle to have the tune come out clean. The sound can differ by blowing your air into the eight different sized pipes, because it changes the wavelength through the instrument due to the size. At first our pan flute was going to be made out of pvc pipes but instead we used metal pipes. Once all was cut we hot glued pennies to the bottom so the air would not get out then taped the bottom to hug onto the sides to give it extra reassurance. To attach each pipe together we hot glued them together and wrapped tape around multiple time to it will be holdable and not wiggle around. Our pan flute can play the “B” major scale. This goes B, C, D, E, F, G, and A are all part of the B major scale. To build our pan flute’s first note we cut the length then we used the multiplier(¼) for the whole scale, meaning that the wavelength is getting cut by ¼ for each new note.
The process: Originally, I planned on constructing the pan flute out of pvc pipes but half way through I realized that the sound from a metal pipe sounded more like a pan flute and overall better. In order to make 8 different notes I had to multiply by the given multiplier 1/4. This allowed me to to cut my wavelength to get the cale of notes
