Use the student's passions and interests to choose books/texts that relate to their interests. Then, use these books/texts to teach reading comprehension and promote reading for pleasure. Furthermore, teachers can use the student's interests to facilitate deeper learning. For example, a student fascinated with AFL footy might be asked to write a story about their favourite team, research exciting information about their favourite player, or independently research the game's rules. Teachers can then use these interests to introduce students to new topics and interests (13).
