Shared reading may lead to improvements in narrative reading comprehension of students with ASD. Below are the steps to engage students in shared reading.
· First, ask students to recall what they read previously and predict how the story will continue. However, students may require additional support, such as explicit teaching and prompting.
· Second, integrate visual clues (i.e., highlighted keywords and images) into the text during reading.
· Third, after reading, ask the students to retell the story by using picture cards to order the story sequence (11).
Alternatively, you can use an adaptive storybook to connect pictures and words (12).
