Students with ASD have been found to have trouble with reading comprehension despite generally demonstrating well-developed decoding skills and word recognition (7; 8; 9;12;18). This is known as hyperlexia, a phenomenon in which decoding skills exceed comprehension skills (7; 8; 9;12;18). Furthermore, findings from students with ASD who identified as poor comprehenders show that inferencing is poor, which means that students are unable to connect information within a text to their background knowledge, possibly due to having less experience with which to connect (8; 19).
