To bridge the gap between decoding and comprehension, focus on sight words/high-frequency words when reading. For example, each week, choose one sight word that you would like the students to focus on, for example, 'and'; then, when reading, highlight this word in the text. You can bring the sight word to the student's attention by verbally saying it, saying the word and pointing at it or highlighting it in a different colour. Then after introducing the 'sight word of the week' you can model how to use the word in a sentence e.g., 'I like chocolate and pasta'. Finally, the next week, introduce a new word, 'but', and continue to highlight the previous word 'and' when reading. It is essential to take it slow and only introduce one word per week and ensure that you also practice the previous words they learned.
You can consolidate the students' prior knowledge of sight words by playing bingo and using flash cards. Also, you can add the sight words the students have learned on curtain rings so you can ask them to identify previously learned words while reading (12).
