NextGen challenged us for a full week, to use our creativity and create spaceships. The earth is uninhabitable due to climate change worsening in the future, humanity is left with six months to either escape our planet or have a last stand to save it. Whether or not we choose to run or fight we must use spaceships. The purpose of the challenge was to test our 3D modelling skills as well as team work and communications skills.
We were team 3 and name ourselves the Expedition Force. Expedition Force included five students, Jake Lunn, Madison Porter, Me, Katie Goodwin, May McNicholas and Kerem Oter.
The first day we chose team flight and started gathering ideas in the form of mood boards and concept art. We also decided each of our roles, I was a 3D modeller, Environment designer and animator. Initially we came up with the idea of stereotypical British theme, with the engines running on tea and the ships shaped like teacups on flying saucers. However, this idea was scrapped after feedback. Then we came up with the idea to make our ships in the shape of tools, with the main ship being a magnet and other ideas like a nail/screw and a chainsaw. The idea was that these tools would have different uses like gathering resources fixing broken parts of the ships etc.
This day we started to 3D model the ideas we came up with, I modelled the screw scavenger from concept art which Katie created, Jake started on the main ship and Katie created the chainsaw ship, again from her concept art. We then started to gather some images for ideas on the background and I started to create the background using blender. Madison started to gather ideas for texturing of the ships which were later scrapped due to moving in a different direction.
Wednesday we had feedback from Tim Coosay and Philip from TT. After the feedback we decided to double down on the cartoonish look we had and made even more models. We also looked at an artist named Eric Geusz for inspiration as he had a similar concept in his art.
This was mostly a day of finalizing models and figuring out the scale of the ships along with the storyboards. We also went back and added a freestyle outline to the ships to make them seem more cartoonish and Jake created and added thrust to the engines.
Finally we created our animations. Jake created an animation showing off the main mothership in more detail and I made an animation with all the ships put together travelling from earth to the new home planet.
