In order to make texturing easier, you can unwrap 3D models which then pastes the geometry in 2D. To unwrap a 3D model affectively, on the 3D model, you can select edge loops (alt click in edge select) to mark seams (right click, mark seam) which then divide the model into the separate sections you see on a UV map.
This is a UV map it shows all of the geometry you have unwrapped and selected.
