What barriers or problems did you encounter during the production and planning?
I had a lot of issues with the values of the piece. As I couldn't rely on contrasting colors to differentiate the design, I had to make sure everything was distinguishable whilst also not emboldening the lineart too much.
I also had problems with the details as I was able to have enough going on with the face and hair, however struggled with adding things to the background or his torso and arms.
How did you manage to overcome these issues throughout the piece?
With the values, blocking in shapes with the lasso tool and playing around with the filters helped immensely. Layering and rendering over the piece also helped as I smoothed out everything to unify all aspects.
I trial and errored the details as shown in the process. I changed the posing, mapped out different sleeves, and added new features that I didn't think of before starting my artwork.
I think looking through apps for inspiration such as Pinterest or art accounts on social media also helps to incorporate unique characteristics to your illustration.
What would you have done differently or continued with if you had more time?
If my art program allowed me to use gradient maps without paying for it, I'd love to touch up on that and broaden my understanding of color theory.
I'd also add a more detailed background of the authorities chasing him, but I believe the comic cover-esque aesthetic allows this to slide as it focuses on Sampo himself.
I would try to do color next time, but I'm proud of myself for trying grey-scale for a complete piece as I feel it's more limiting and challenging than having all the colors at your disposal.
