Which communication methods are present in your production and are they effective?
I really enjoyed applying the slow-in and slow-out principle as it makes movements feel natural and smooth. Arcs were incredibly helpful as I wanted the ghost's movements to be wispy and sporadic.
Onion-skinning was crucial here as I would use both pose-to-pose and straight ahead in my animation. When her head dips low near the end, I used pose-to-pose to provide a more controlled movement. When the ghost flies away initially right after they met, I used straight ahead for an unpredictable flurry of movement. This is to show the audience that the ghost is frightened and attempting to escape.
I also used over-the-top cartoon sound effects to make the final production more lively and childlike. The pop of the ghost appearing from the bushes and its audible blinking furthers this aspiration.
I believe this was effective, although I'd love to do more research on character reactions and movements in famed animations.
What could you have done better and would you change anything?
Honestly, I wanted more of the animation to be fully realised, but my program wasn't working with me. I'd refine the scene where Kokoro hops over stones in the river and add more backgrounds to plainer scenes.
The audio and music is also a bit all over the place and I wish I had given myself more time to focus on post-production as I had for the animation itself.
For a first try, it's a solid piece of work. However, I know I could do better if I had easier access to ibispaint X and if it was more convenient to use.
What does this bring for the future? What will you do to improve?
I'd like to get my XPPen at home working so I can use Photoshop and Animate for college work and progress from there. I want to practice all kinds of principles and basic methods of animation, such as mundane movements and integrating perspective into my work.
For now, I'll have to settle for ibispaint X's nefarious animation feature and build my skills with it despite its complications.
