This is the beginning of my piece- I wanted him to hold a gift box filled with various items prevalent in circuses or comedy shows, as well as smoke bombs flying out of the box (the circular objects with heart symbols). I then made him hold a magic wand in the other hand, depicting a crude mimic of a magician revealing what's in his storage.
I struggled with the dark, almost intelligible coloring, so I lightened it up with filters. The pose also felt stiff, so I then changed the positioning of his legs as they were difficult to render in the position they were in and lacked clarity.
After this, I changed the positioning of his arms, making him hold a stolen purse that is inspired by two of the most expensive bags in the world (Boarini Milanesi and Mouawad 1001 Nights Diamond Purse.)
The hand felt unnaturally bent, so I went for a more relaxed stance.
Then I proceeded to add more details whilst incorporating the new pose, such as filling his pockets and the purse with stolen jewelry.
I thought the bags holding jewelry looked clunky and unnatural and the space around them was empty, so I decided to use some perspective with the other hand. It's adorned with expensive rings and necklaces, further implementing the idea of his grand theft.
I think I'll keep it in grey-scale as to really sell the 80s crime show look.
I kept erasing and refining with the felt tip pen on mid opacity so I could build up the opaqueness like a painting. I used filters such as Difference and Invert to play around with the values and make sure it wasn't too dark.
There are minimal changes between these three, however, I added a checker pattern to his clothing to fill in the blank space and add more detail. I also sharpened some uncertain shapes and refined his right hand.
This is the final piece! Again, I wanted to add more pop as to really accentuate the prankster thief aesthetic.
To overcome the darkness of the illustration, I added lighting that can be interpretated as showlights or flashlights of the authorities. To fill in the backroom, I drew in some confetti and lowered the opacity as to not make them clash with the central piece.
