An internship is an elective course that provides you with opportunities to get out into the working world to learn about a specific career or profession you have interest in. There are in-school internships, Northampton community internships and virtual internships.
An internship is an opportunity for you to gain experiences from within your community. You'll be welcomed into offices, classrooms and job sites where you'll get to know people already doing the work you'd like to do someday. You'll learn new skills and receive mentorship from a professional.
An internship is about community. You'll be a part of making our local economy and school community more grounded in training and supporting the next generation of employees. They'll benefit too, as you bring new ideas, skills and ways of seeing and interacting with the world to their organization.
More and more, we see how students are even more successful in the classroom and at work when they feel empowered in their career exploration and pursuit of their goals. Workplace skills and career exploration can help you make informed decisions about future work and college options.
Now is the time to start connecting your skills, values and knowledge areas to the working world. You'll explore your passions and discover how it translates to a career path for yourself. Learning from everyday people living the career will open up your perspectives and widen your interests as you develop your academic and career goals.
The ultimate prize to any internship is being able to leave that experience with a better understanding of yourself, your plans after high school and what drives your passions.
In an internship you'll be learning from a mentor, a manager, or a co0worker, interacting with the public or being exposed to community events, projects and so much more! The workplace is your classroom! Course themes include:
Cultivating Career Interests
Habits for the Workplace
Joining the Workforce
Occupation & Career Research
Professional Toolkit (resumes, cover letters, interviewing)
Goal Setting & Reflection
Your decisions on college, degrees and trainings will be more intentional. You'll start to see how the courses you've already taken will help you in the working world and make you an attractive applicant to employers. You'll gain experience and exposure to work-based skills, project management and work cultures.
