MASSACHUSETTS WORK PERMIT FOR MINORS (Think of this like a driver’s permit to be able to work)
If you are under 18, you must get a work permit before starting a new job. Your employer must keep your work permit on file.
STEP 1: Find a Job! Use the Career Hub for local jobs and job search resources.
STEP 2: You've been hired and your new employer wants you to start next week. First, you must pick up and complete a Work Permit Application at the NHS Main Office with Ms. Reeves.
STEP 3: Fill out the Application. Who is your employer? Where is the place of employment? What will your general duties be? How many hours per week will you work?
STEP 4: Get the right people to sign off. Your new employer/hiring manager signs, your guardian signs, and you sign.
**If you're 14-15 years old, you must ALSO have your primary care (your family doctor) sign off.**
STEP 5: Return signed application to Ms. Reeves at the NHS Main Office. YOU MUST DO THIS YOURSELF and IN-PERSON.
STEP 6: Ms. Reeves will review your application and issue you a WORK PERMIT (permission to work!). This may take a day or two, so plan ahead.
STEP 7: When you receive your issued work permit, bring it to your employer. They must keep your work permit on file. Then you can start to work!
**Reminder, a work permit must be issued BEFORE you can begin working your new job**
**Every time you get a new job, a new position or have a new employer, you need to complete a NEW work permit**
(For example, you work for the YMCA one summer as a camp counselor. The next summer you work for the YMCA but as a groundskeeper. You'll need a NEW work permit. )
