How To Get a Work Permit
MASSACHUSETTS WORK PERMITS FOR MINORS
If you are under 18, you must get a work permit BEFORE starting a new job. Think of this like a driver’s permit to be able to start work. Your employer must keep your work permit on file.
Every time you get a new job, a new position or have a new employer, you need to complete a new work permit. For example, you work for the YMCA one summer as a camp counselor. The next summer you work for the YMCA but as a groundskeeper. You'll need a new work permit.
STEP 1: Find a job. You can use the Job Postings.
STEP 2: Pick up a WORK PERMIT APPLICATION at the Northampton High School Main Office from Ms. Reeves.
STEP 3: Fill out the Application.
STEP 4: Get people to SIGN the form:
Your new employer/hiring manager
Your guardian
You sign
If you're 14-15 years old, you must also have your primary care (your family doctor) sign
STEP 5: Return the signed application to Ms. Reeves IN PERSON at the Northampton High School Main Office.
STEP 6: Ms. Reeves will review your application and issue you a WORK PERMIT. This may take a day or two, so plan ahead.
STEP 7: Bring your work permit to your employer. They must keep your work permit on file. You can start to work!
