Photo Manipulation and Ethics

A. What are some of the main points you read about in the website above regarding manipulating images?

Some of the main points I read about in this article is photojournalism, photoshop, the evolution of media,  the impact of media on people, and the manipulation of images. For example, the website goes in full detail discussing editing tools and the challenges photojournalists experience because of their job to publish media without twisting the truth by following guidelines like not toning or cropping photos. The article also discusses the difference between "Ethics" vs "Aesthetics" when it comes to media managers and photographers because they have to understand that their jobs have different focus points when images are being published since one is trying to portray our reality and the other(photographer) is trying to be creative and has the ability to use photoshop. Another point that regards manipulation is how over time our society's use of photoshop in images has evolved and caused people to question the credibility. Since photographers can produce professional looking photos that are not real to the public through advertisements and news which is causing people to loose trust in in our media.

B. What is the philosophy of newspapers like the Washington Post and the New York Times regarding image manipulation?

The philosophy newspapers like the Washington Post and New York Times believe in is having their photographers not change the tone/color, the setting of their photos, or use of image scaling. Seen when an Charlotte Observer states, "Journalism cannot be about original works of art unless it is labeled as such." This quote proves that overall the Washington Post and New York Times both believe in showing the truth to the media and avoiding photo manipulations so they can showcase our reality through original work.

C. What do you think are acceptable things you could do to an image and not cross the line unto an unethical manipulation?

Some acceptable things I believe I can do to a photo is changing the lighting, sharpening, or balancing. Since these editing tools help alter the image positively and still showcases the original scene. Although combining photos or applying filters to photos before you publish are wrongful uses of photoshop. Overall, I believe these techniques are acceptable some uses of photoshop that aren't is fulling altering an object or subject because these photos deceive viewers.

D. Post a screenshot of the photo manipulation (this means get that image by either downloading it OR taking a screenshot and post it on your site) that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical. If you do not know what the word ethic or unethical means, look them up on the internet. It is very important you know what those two words mean. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think it is so bad. You will most likely have to take a screen shot to get this image. Command-shift-4 gets you the cursor you need to take a screen shot. Make sure that screen shot ends up in your Google Drive.

This image is the most unethical because the entire color of the photo has changed from black and white into color. Also the shape, smile, and hair of the model has totally changed because they edited the persons face onto a different body. Even the props in the first photo has changed from a barrel to money which results in creating a different main topic. Overall, this photo is unethical because there are so many wrongful uses of photoshop causing the photos to be manipulated and not hold a truth or story.

E. Post a screenshot of the the photo manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others. Please write at least 2-3 sentences explaining why you think this one is not so bad.

This photo I believe is the least unethical because they didn't edit or crop any people out. Also the only change of the photo is the overall color and lighting which can be acceptable depending on the situation. Overall, this photo is the most acceptable because no negative changes truly happened and it mostly stayed the same causing it to still tell a true story!
