Settling North America: The French and the Dutch colonies

Read about how the French and Dutch settle their claimed territory in lesson 4 (pages 166-173). Oh how I wish we were in the classroom. All of these people could name this new territory just about anything they could dream. If you were settling these locations what names would you decide? (post them on the form found under the S.S. tab week 7 or email me your thoughts.)

After reading lesson 4, answer the questions provided here or answer on the form found on the S.S. tab week 7 (This provides immediate scoring).

Look at the chart on page 173. Then read the last paragraph on page 173 (Like the rest of New France...). Explain why this information would be important to know as we head into learning about the 13 colonies. Please submit this by sharing a google doc or emailing an image of your work.

5W Reading: Unit 6 week 5

Monday:

Introduce vocabulary:

blares errand exchange connection

imagery personification assonance consonance

Use this list to find the definitions of each word. Then write a sentence for each of the vocabulary words that shows your understanding of the meaning.

Respond to essential question: What can our connections to the world teach us?

  • We are all connected in some way. What connections can you think of that you have? Think back to our read aloud book "Towers Falling". In the story they created circles that show the different connections. What are your circles that connect you to others? Send me a picture of your circles or try to create them using a google doc and the drawing tools (found under the insert tab).

Begin new spelling list (*Both lists have similar words and focus on the same pattern. Typically 15 or more words are the exact same.):

Blue Group (grade level expectation)

Green Group (provides a slight challenge by adding inflectional endings and other slight variations)

Grammar: Prepositional phrases! (remember: anywhere a rabbit can go) pg. 146

Packet can be found here.

Tuesday:

Read "To Travel" & "Wild Blossoms".

Also, answer the questions at the bottom of the last page in the story, page 441 .

Spelling: Practice spelling by creating the sentences that you plan to use on your test. Look up the words in the dictionary if needed and have a family member check the grammar.

Wednesday:

Read "Running" and answer the comprehension questions. We typically read for fluency practice on Wednesdays, but the story provided is a poem. Click here for additional practice with assonance and consonance.

Fluency practice this week is to find a short story, such as a children's book, and practice reading it aloud. Read to a younger sibling if you have one. If you do not, read it aloud to a parent. This should be somewhat like a performance where you make the voices come to life. If the character is someone like Fancy Nancy, then you should have a prim and proper voice. If the character is an old lady, then your voice should be crackly and old sounding. If you can record yourself and send the video of your performance to Mrs. Weber.

Grammar: Prepositional phrases with pronouns. pg. 148

Vocabulary: Make sure you are reviewing your vocabulary to prepare for the quiz included in the Selection quiz.

Thursday:

Read "You are My Music" & "You and I" in your large Wonders book. Complete the selection quiz which also includes vocabulary.

Spelling: Practice as you typically would. If you need a challenge, put them into alphabetical order without looking at your list. Games and alternative activities can be found on Spelling City or the Wonders website.

Friday:

Find the lyrics to one of your favorite songs. Search for examples of assonance and consonance. Popular music often uses these tools as ways to make a song sound like it is rhyming without actually having to rhyme.

They have opened the link to AR to be available at home. If you would like to take a quiz on what you are reading please use this link. This is optional.

Spelling:Take spelling test that includes 3-5 sentences using a minimum of 5 spelling words.
