Unit 6 Week 3

Dear Family Member:

This week our class will be focusing on how living things adapt to their environment. We will also talk about how adaptation helps animals survive in their environments, even when they are extreme.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Words to Know: comparisons In this activity, you say a word on the vocabulary list and your child writes down the first thing that pops into his or her head, related to that word. When you’ve gone through all the words, go back and discuss what your child wrote.
  • Spelling: homophones In this activity, you say the words on the list, one by one,so that you rchild can spell them. Ask your child to spell as many words as possible correctly in one minute. Repeat the activity to encourae your child to get a better grade.

Comprehension: cause and effect

In this activity, you and your child work together to find words in a cause-and-effect word search puzzle.

Vocabulary

A copy is shared with you via google classroom. You can also find a link to the document here. You will need to make a copy to edit yourself.

The quiz will be included in the selection quiz provided on Thursday.

Grammar

This week we are focusing on negatives!

Take a look at the assigned work found on the Wonders site or click here to get the PDF format of the packet that can be submitted through email.

As a suggestion we typically complete one worksheet a day with Friday's page being our quiz. If you are using the Wonders site you will notice that I will only assign one page per day.

Spelling

Take a look either on Wonders or Spelling City to see their new words and identify the pattern for the week.

Practice as usual. (Flash cards, writing them each day, Spelling City, etc)

***This Friday I have previously set obligations. I will try my best to get a spelling video created in the afternoon. You can always have a family member read the words to you. You can always wait until tomorrow or even Monday to take the spelling test. You can always give yourself a day off. Sometimes you may have had to leave early for something or missed it because of a band lesson. I've always said it's okay to miss one or two test because I have plenty of evidence.

Parents have two options:

      • Check students work at home and email me a score.
      • Send me a picture of the spelling test and I will score and respond with students with scores.

I believe all students should practice all of the words as it is beneficial to recognize the patterns and use the knowledge of the words we already know to help support/make connections to the words we may struggle with.

Monday:

Take this time to really take a look at vocabulary and spelling for the week.

This might mean that instead of copying the sentences from the Wonder's site or dictionary, you actually take the time to create your own sentence. For spelling you might begin to create sentences for words and send them to me as options for the Friday video.

Also, complete your first page for Grammar and submit it by sharing a photo, sharing a document, or completeing it on the Wonder's site.

***If you would like to get a head start on other items shown later in the week please feel free to do so. I ask that you complete it in the order mentioned as they slowly build off each other.

Tuesday:

Read “Mysterious Oceans” found in your small Wonder's book. This can also be found online. Answer the questions provided below.

Wednesday:

Read “Life in the Desert” (Fluency packet in supplies, Wonders site, or here)

Read for 1 minute to a family member. Mark the spot at 1 minute and continue to read the rest of the story. Answer the comprehension questions on the last page and record number of words read at the bottom of that page. Try a second round and see if you improve!

Thursday

Read "Survival at 40 Below" in your large Wonders book (can be found on the Wonders site)

Respond to the selection test (assigned on Wonders site or here for the PDF version.)

Friday

Send Mrs. Weber a message about what independent books you have been reading while at home. Do you like it? Have you read it before? What are the main characters up to? What predictions do you have about what's happening? Use this link to begin filling out a story structure if you'd like.

Use this day to get caught up on anything else that you may need to work on. Also, you can take this day to write in your journal.

Don't have one? Grab some paper, fold it in half and there you go!

Don't have that much paper around? Create a google doc and begin typing. (This is great typing skills that you will need, like, forever.)
