Unit 6 Week 1

Dear Family Member:

This week our class will be focusing on how different groups of people contribute to a single cause. For example, we will be taking a look at how different groups of people contributed to the war effort during the Second World War.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Words to Know: homophones You and your child will use the vocabulary words in sentences about a group of people getting ready to set off on an expedition to some unknown land.
  • Spelling/Phonics: words with Greek roots In this activity, you and your child work together to find list words that have the same beginning or the same ending.

Comprehension: theme

In this activity, you and your child are presented with several common themes. Together you will try to come up with the name of a TV show, movie, book, or article that has the same theme.

Extension: Homophones

Match maker! Use the list provided to create cards. Play memory where you have to match the two cards which have the same homophone. (The second page of the document has blank spaces for you to create your own!)

For example:

  • black insect with wings
  • to go up in the air

Both are fly!

Use the activity below from Wonders to have additional practice with homophones.

Vocabulary

A copy is shared with you via google classroom. You can also find a link to the document here. You will need to make a copy to edit yourself.

The quiz will be included in the selection quiz provided on Thursday.

Grammar

This week we are focusing on adverbs!

Take a look at the assigned work found on the Wonders site or click here to get the PDF format of the packet that can be submitted through email.

As a suggestion we typically complete one worksheet a day with Friday's page being our quiz. If you are using the Wonders site you will notice that I will only assign one page per day.

Spelling

Take a look either on Wonders or Spelling City to see their new words and identify the pattern for the week.

Practice as usual. (Flash cards, writing them each day, Spelling City, etc)

Friday I will post a video of me calling out the words for the test. (Students can create sentences that I could possibly use in the video by submitting them via the "Have a Question" form on the home page.)

Parents have two options:

      • Check students work at home and email me a score.
      • Send me a picture of the spelling test and I will score and respond with students with scores.

I believe all students should practice all of the words as it is beneficial to recognize the patterns and use the knowledge of the words we already know to help support/make connections to the words we may struggle with.

They are together. I couldn't figure out which word I skipped until after my kids calmed down by coloring. You only have 24 words. The missing word is mechanic.

Monday:

Read “Hope for the Troops” . Answer the questions provided below. (This is also assigned on Wonders site).

Tuesday:

Read “Shipped Out” found in your small Wonder's book. This can also be found online. Answer the questions provided below.

Wednesday:

Read “Books for Victory” (Fluency packet in supplies, Wonders site, or here)

Read for 1 minute to a family member. Mark the spot at 1 minute and continue to read the rest of the story. Answer the comprehension questions on the last page and record number of words read at the bottom of that page. Try a second round and see if you improve!

Thursday

Read "The Unbreakable Code" in your large Wonders book (can be found on the Wonders site)

Respond to the selection test (assigned on Wonders site or here for PDF version)

Friday

Jump on Wonders or click to view the weekly assessment. It is two stories with questions that follow each story. Question 11 is a written response. If you are doing it outside of the Wonders site you can create a google doc and share that with me as well.
