Unit 6 Week 5

Dear Family Member:

This week our class will be focusing on how our connections to other people can teach us things about ourselves. We will also be turning to poetry to learn how these connections affect us and others.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout

  • Words to Know: personification You and your child will take turns using one of the vocabulary words in a sentence, but leaving the word out. You will then guess the missing word based on the rest of the sentence.
  • Spelling/Phonics: suffixes -ible and -able In this activity, you give your child a word, and he or she tells you whether it has an -ible or an -able ending before spelling it aloud.

Comprehension: point of view

In this activity, you and your child read three different paragraphs about traveling to learn about different people and cultures. After reading, you’ll discuss and compare the point of view of each article.

Vocabulary

A copy is shared with you via google classroom. You can also find a link to the document here. You will need to make a copy to edit yourself.

The quiz will be included in the selection quiz provided on Thursday.

Grammar

This week we are focusing on prepositional phrases! We have definitely worked on this before break. This is one final review. This is your last week of normal work in Grammar.

Take a look at the assigned work found on the Wonders site or click here to get the PDF format of the packet that can be submitted through email.

As a suggestion we typically complete one worksheet a day with Friday's page being our quiz. If you are using the Wonders site you will notice that I will only assign one page per day.

Spelling

Take a look either on Wonders or Spelling City to see their new words and identify the pattern for the week.

Practice as usual. (Flash cards, writing them each day, Spelling City, etc)

Parents have two options:

      • Check students work at home and email me a score.
      • Send me a picture of the spelling test and I will score and respond with students with scores.

I believe all students should practice all of the words as it is beneficial to recognize the patterns and use the knowledge of the words we already know to help support/make connections to the words we may struggle with.

Monday:

Take this time to really take a look at vocabulary and spelling for the week.

This might mean that instead of copying the sentences from the Wonder's site or dictionary, you actually take the time to create your own sentence. For spelling you might begin to create sentences for words and send them to me as options for the Friday video.

Also, complete your first page for Grammar and submit it by sharing a photo, sharing a document, or completeing it on the Wonder's site.

***If you would like to get a head start on other items shown later in the week please feel free to do so. I ask that you complete it in the order mentioned as they slowly build off each other.

Tuesday:

Read “To Travel” & "Wild Blossoms" found in your small Wonder's book. These can also be found online. Answer the questions provided below.

Wednesday:

Read “Running” (Fluency packet in supplies, Wonders site, or here)

Answer the comprehension questions on the last page. Click here for extra practice on assonance and consonance.

Fluency practice this week is to find a short story, such as a children's book, and practice reading it aloud. Read to a younger sibling if you have one. If you do not, read it aloud to a parent. This should be somewhat like a performance where you make the voices come to life. If the character is someone like Fancy Nancy, then you should have a prim and proper voice. If the character is an old lady, then your voice should be crackly and old sounding. If you can record yourself and send the video of your performance to Mrs. Weber.

Thursday

Read "You are My Music" & "You and I" in your large Wonders book (can be found on the Wonders site)

Respond to the selection test (assigned on Wonders site or here for the PDF version.)

Friday

Find the lyrics to one of your favorite songs. Search for examples of assonance and consonance. Popular music often uses these tools as ways to make a song sound like it is rhyming without actually having to rhyme.

They have opened the link to AR to be available at home. If you would like to take a quiz on what you are reading please use this link. This is optional.

Use this day to get caught up on anything else that you may need to work on. Also, you can take this day to write in your journal.
