The Schools of Art in Ancient India: The Buddhism spread greatly during the first and second centuries, had spurred a renewed artistic passionate to illustrate the enlightened message of Buddhism. During this prolific time emerged three main “schools” in India that had developed their own particular styles and distinctions. These were the Gandhara, Mathura, and Amaravati schools.

Kuchipudi, the dance, takes it name from the village of Kuchipudi in Andhra Pradesh where it originated and was developed as a male dance tradition. It had a certain vigour associated with it and depicted the unity of the male and female in one body, allowing the dancer to interpret and enact a male or a female role within the performance. Swapna Sundari, one of the renowned exponents of Kuchipudi, traces the origin, evolution and changing nuances of the dance form through interviews with her Guru Pasumarthy Seetharamaia, other acclaimed exponents and well known dance critics.
Kuchipudi is the name of a village in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh near Vijayawada. Andhra has a very long tradition of dance-drama which was known under the generic name of Yakshagaana. In 17th century Kuchipudi style of Yakshagaana was conceived by Siddhendra Yogi a talented Vaishnava poet and visionary who had the capacity to give concrete shape to some of his visions. It was Lakshminarayan Shastry (1886-1956) who introduced many new elements including solo dancing and training of female dancers in this dance style and thus, developed Kuchipudi as it is known today.
