Social justice issues are at the core of the social work profession. The earliest social workers dedicated themselves to helping the poor, and modern social workers confront poverty, injustice, racism, sexism, and all forms of inequality. While the issues have become more diverse and complex, the central tenets of social work remain the same. Respecting the dignity of each individual, and their right to self-determination, are still paramount in any social worker’s mission. Not all of the organizations on this list employ social workers, but each one has dedicated itself to promoting equality and demolishing injustice. Social work can be a challenging and emotionally taxing career, but people who pursue it find that doing good in the world and promoting social justice offer their own rewards.

NASW has set five social justice priorities to address over the next year — voting rights, criminal justice reforms, juvenile justice, immigration reform and economic justice and equity. Within this set of social justice priorities are four sub-priorities – health and behavioral health equity, racial and population-based discrimination, matters involving courts such as U.S. Supreme Court and federal judge nominations and environmental justice. Social Justice Issue Briefs provide an overview of these topics in a focused, researched and concise package.
