Program Details:
Reading and Videos: The intent is to cultivate a reading habit, specifically reading of Dharma texts so as to understand the depth and range of our Dharma literature. Some students may work well on their own and might not need to interact with instructors – and this is fine. These students would simply select the books or videos that they want to cover and write a book (video) report using the form provided at the end of this direction packet. However, if a student works better with structure and support from instructors, there are 6 meetings scheduled from July 12 – August 16 on Sundays at 10:00am after shloka (zoom link will be sent)
Book selection: Please use the suggested reading list as a guide. If you own a book or find one that is freely available online and is on the same topic areas that are covered (on texts, stories, rites, philosophy, relevance, scholars, saints, arts and sciences of Dharmic traditions of Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, or Sikhism), please send us an email to confirm its suitability for the summer reading program.
Video selection: We have included links to videos that can also be used in writing the book report. Many of the listed videos are also uploaded to playlists (titled as texts, rites, history, geography, meaning, people, arts and sciences) and made available on SSVT Dharma Education YouTube channel. A complete list of video links is also included at the end of the reading list, by category.
In the recommended reading list, the title of each book is hyperlinked to Amazon.com for easy reference on details of the book. Many other titles are available on the Education Portal www.ssvt.org/education (under Virtual Library and Kids Zone) and online at https://archive.org.
Please complete a book/video report form for each title that you read or view.
