(also known as “Hindu Council” or simply “the Council”) was established in May 1984 and got formally incorporated as a legal entity in March 1986 in New York State. Since then Council has met almost every year (with some breaks in between) at one of the Temples. The current Secretariat office is in New York. It is a recognized 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Hindu organization. It is governed by 9 Board of Director Temples. The functions carried out in the Council can only be by the designated representatives of member Temples. The number of participant and member temples are increasing.

UHJT Objectives:
To promote religious, cultural and educational activities related to Hindu and Jain religions in the Greater Washington- Baltimore Metropolitan Region and to promote study and understanding of these two religions;
To assist in the setting up and management of Hindu and Jain temples and organizations through sharing of information and experience;
To assist and to promote charitable community service activities principally in the Greater Washington-Baltimore Metropolitan Region and elsewhere in events of natural disaster as the Board of Directors of UHJT may so decide;
To promote and participate in multi-faith dialogues to create better understanding between faiths.
