In February and March of 2021, our preschool and kindergarten teachers had the opportunity to attend a preschool bookmaking workshop presented by Lynn Kuykendall and Angela Compton, literacy specialists with the South Carolina Dept. of Education. This workshop provided our literacy coaches and teachers with a research based, integrated approach for implementing writing workshop with our youngest writers through the process of book making.
4K Teacher, Murphy Shill left the full day workshop intrigued and excited about the possibility and partnered with her literacy coach, Sara Margaret West to implement book making with her four year old class. She invited us in to visit her classroom to see her writer's workshop in action. Take a look at her student's books and a clip of her mini-lesson below. If you are interested in trying out book making in your class check out the resources shared on this page and let your literacy coach know. We are glad to support you and your students' growth as writers!

Use the scroll bar to view each page. At four Binita already knows that stories have a familiar structure with a beginning, middle, and end. She knows that details can be added to your pictures and your words to make it more interesting for the reader. She knows where to place ending punctuation. The list goes on and on about what her book shows about what she knows as a reader and a writer.
Click on the video above to view Binita reading aloud her Butterfly Book. What do you notice that Binita knows and understands about her power as an author? At four, Binita already knows that she is writing for her reader. Did you notice how she paused after she read each page to look up and see what her teacher was thinking and to see what the response would be? Bonita has also learned that if you include unicorns and best friends in your book, your reader will smile!

How did Mrs. Shill help Kaleb and Binita discover that they have the power to write their own books? Through noticing what authors of picture books do in their books with Mrs. Shill, her students are not only learning about letters, and sounding out words, and understanding how to comprehend meaning from a text, they are also able to see possibilities for their own picture books, giving them an opportunity to apply their developing reading and writing skills in a truly authentic and relevant way. Take a moment to click on the video below to hear Mrs. Shill explain why book making was an effective practice for her preschoolers this year.
Mrs. Shill invited us in to join her K-4 class for their writing workshop. You can see in the video above her mini-lesson modeling for students how to write their own book and then providing them with time to work on their own.

After attending last spring's book making workshop, Miss Evatt , a special education teacher at Woodland Heights Elementary implemented this practice in her class. Click on the link below or the picture to the left to view her class's Crayon book. Miss Evatt read aloud the mentor text, The Day the Crayons Quit by Oliver Jeffers to her students and they each chose their favorite crayon color to write a letter to using a sentence frame Miss Evatt provided to help scaffold their writing. We would love to see what books your early childhood students make this year!
