One of the most effective ways to provide support to a classroom full of students who have a wide variety of interests, strengths, and areas for needed growth is through targeted, small group guided reading instruction. When second grade teachers at Roebuck Elementary were presented with the opportunity to pilot a structured, Tier 2 approach in their classrooms for guided reading they could have easily declined explaining now is not the time to try anything new. Instead, they embraced the opportunity with the philosophy that now more than ever before our students need differentiated support to reach them where they are and to intentionally support their growth as readers. Check out how they are working to implement targeted Tier 2 guided reading during their WIN time to provide all students with meaningful opportunities to apply the skills and strategies they are learning as readers, writers, and researchers.
While Tier 2 targeted, small group instruction is necessary for our students who need additional support it is important that WIN be engaging and full of meaningful learning opportunities for all of our students. When the second grade team of teachers began this journey piloting Tier 2 instruction with Fountas and Pinnell guided reading, Lindsey Harris knew that this WIN time would be a rich opportunity for students to engage in book clubs, independently practice word study in the context of reading and writing, and apply their research skills they are developing as part of their STEAM units of study. Please click the link to the left to see and hear directly from her students how WIN time works and click the link below to hear her explanation of how Lindsey Harris and her team of second grade teachers used a gradual release model and a backwards by design approach to create a culture of independence during WIN time for their students.

Notice that the students who are not in her small group are all independently engaged in different authentic reading and writing opportunities such as book clubs, reading responses on padlet, and penguin research.
It is essential when implementing effective small group instruction during 2020-2021 to ensure that safety guidelines are followed in order to minimize the risk of Covid-19. Our second grade team at Roebuck under the direction of their administration have worked diligently to ensure that students receive small group instruction in their seats with their plexiglass. You can see in the top video to the left Evelyn Gould moves to her small group students one on one to listen to them read individually, limiting contact in each student's plexiglass to five minutes or less. When she reaches the discussion part of her lesson, she invites students to join her at the back table to briefly discuss the text and review the teaching point before explaining their application activity and dismissing them back to their individual seats. Notice in the video how the other students are engaged in their WIN time work that Ms. Gould provided to them in a Must Do/May Do chart on the promethean board.
You can see in the bottom video to the left how in Ms. Bobo's class she structures her small group where students are sitting in their desks with plexiglass and she is sitting in a desk as well with plexiglass. Students can safely see and hear her instruction and she intentionally keeps her direct teaching short and concise.
In this part of the lesson, Ms. Harris typically provides students with targeted instruction. You will see in this video where her students' own reading of the text provided a natural opportunity for her to help guide students to apply decoding strategies using the word study/phonics lesson she had identified as their target. Ms. Harris then helps students make connections about the text they are reading in small group with what they are learning about in their Tier 1 instruction.
While there are essential components to effective preparation prior to your instruction of your targeted, small groups there are lots of possibilities for your lesson plans. Katrina Hankins, the literacy coach at Roebuck created a teacher friendly lesson plan resource for teachers to use to get started that included the essential components of which students will be served in small groups, which text will be used, what is the learning goal or target, the explicit teaching point, and assessment of learning. This template is available by clicking the link below. Tier 2 Guided Reading Lesson Plan Template You can see how teachers at Roebuck were given freedom and flexibility to make their own lesson plans as they prepared for their implementation of their Tier 2 guided reading groups, including elements that they knew would be useful to them and to their unique teaching styles. You can see two examples below.

An essential component to effective Tier 2 reading instruction is consistent progress monitoring. This not only provides the student with an opportunity for individualized learning but it also provides the teacher with valuable information to inform her instruction as well as data to determine future grouping. One of the highlights of our classroom visits to second grade at Roebuck were the interactions with students who were engaged in meaningful reading and writing experiences and who were just excited to be able to work on texts that mattered to them. One of my most enjoyable student interactions was with this young reader in Allyn Wiggins' class. He inspired me with how he figured out how to take a pencil with a broken eraser and make it work. He was just so proud of what he figured out and I left that afternoon realizing that he was on to something. It is through the "figuring out" of what our students need and how we take all that we know and all we have to make a difference in the lives of our students. I am thankful for the many ways that our second grade teachers at Roebuck and our teachers across our district are doing this very same work each and every day with our students. We are in this together and I welcome the opportunity to join you and your team as you begin implementing targeted, Tier 2 small group instruction during your WIN time. Let me know how I can best support you. #wearebettertogether
