If you must celebrate Thanksgiving with others who are not in your household, please remember six things: wear a mask, keep your distance, keep it brief, wash your hands often, visit in a well-ventilated area (outside is best), and by all means, stay home if you are sick, have been told to quarantine, or have tested positive for COVID-19.

There will be no report Thursday or Friday. The Scurry County Health Unit will continue working and monitoring throughout the Thanksgiving holiday and the weekend, but will also spend some much-needed time with their families.

Please keep our first responders and healthcare staff in your thoughts as they continue working and serving our community throughout the holiday in these difficult circumstances.

Stay well, stay safe, and take care of your family, friends, and neighbors.

New cases continue to trend upward. There are 51 new positives and 39 new recoveries to report since the last update. Unfortunately there are also two additional deaths included in today's report: our community lost a male between the age of 60-70 and a female between the ages of 90-100.

There have been 258 new COVID-19 cases among Scurry County residents in November, which is an average of 16 new cases per day. Earlier in the month we projected that new cases in November would surpass October if we continued the pace of 14 new cases/day. We are on track to exceed that projection. With Thanksgiving around the corner, it is even more important to practice the guidelines from the CDC to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our community.

With this in mind, please follow CDC guidelines to slow the spread.

1. Wear a mask when around others who do not live in your household.

2. Stay 6 feet away from others whenever possible (when it isn't, wear a mask properly - over your mouth and nose.)

3. Stay home when you are sick, have been asked to quarantine, or have tested positive for COVID-19).

4. Wash your hands often. Use hand sanitizer if it's not possible to wash your hands.

Know how it spreads:

COVID-19 spreads easily from person to person, mainly by the following routes:

• Between people who are in close contact with one another (within 6 feet).

• Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, breathes, sings or talks.

• Respiratory droplets cause infection when they are inhaled or deposited on mucous membranes, such as those that line the inside of the nose and mouth.

• People who are infected but do not have symptoms can also spread the virus to others.

Less common ways COVID-19 can spread:

• Under certain circumstances (for example, when people are in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation), COVID-19 can sometimes be spread by airborne transmission.

• COVID-19 spreads less commonly through contact with contaminated surfaces.
