Before you go to the farm read books and sing songs about farms to start learning  vocabulary and know what to expect. The library and Youtube have lots of free resources.

 When asking your preschooler questions think about their level of language.  Ask questions at their level. Be sure to balance free play and observation with language practice. Your child  shouldn’t realize you are quizzing them, make it feel natural. 

∙ Pre language- say show me ______ and have them point to the answer 

∙ Level 1: Yes/No questions 

∙ Level 2: _______ or _________ Questions 

∙ Level 3: Who, when, what or where short or one word answers 

∙ Level 4: Who, when, what or where with longer descriptive answers 

∙ Level 5: Why or How? 

Example:  

∙ Pre language: point to the chicken 

∙ Level 1: Is that a chicken? 

∙ Level 2: Is that a chicken or a horse? 

∙ Level 3: What animal is that? 

∙ Level 4: What is the chicken doing?

There are many  

things to touch: a  

furry animal, a  

bumpy vegetable, a  smooth vegetable, wet grass, dry hay

Smells the foods in  the markets or the  flowers in the  

garden. Smell in the  café. Smell near the  animals. Sweet fruit,  Stinky animals,  

Yummy foods

Talk about the  

animals, colors,  

sizes, etc. You can  even bring a  

magnifying glass to  look at things up  

close.

What do the animals  say? Does the hay  make a sound when  you step on it? Can  you hear the animal  chew? Listen to the  tractor. Knock on a  pumpkin and hear  the sound.

You may choose to  purchase something  to taste at the barn  or eat farm foods at  home sweet fruits,  sour lemons, spicy  peppers, are the  

veggies yummy or  yucky?

¿Qué es? (una cabra) 

Intermedio: 

¿Tiene la cabra  

plumas o pelo? Tiene  pelo. 

¿Su pelo es marrón o  morado? Es marrón. 

Más avanzado: 

Mira la cabra. ¿Qué  hay en su  

cabeza? (cuernos) ¿Los cuernos se ven  duros o blandos? ¿Qué ves en su  barbilla? (una barba)

Hay muchas cosas  que tocar: un  

animal peludo, una  verdura rugosa,  una verdura suave, césped mojada,  heno seco

Huele los alimentos de  los mercados o las  

flores del jardín. Huele  en el café. Huele cerca  de los animales. Fruta  dulce, Animales  

apestosos, Alimentos  deliciosos

Habla de los  

animales,  

colores,  

tamaños, etc.  

Incluso puedes  traer una lupa  

para ver las  

cosas de cerca.

¿Qué dicen los  

animales? ¿El heno  hace algún ruido  

cuando lo pisa? 

¿Puedes oír al animal  masticar? Escuche el  tractor. Toca una  

calabaza y escucha el  sonido.

Puede optar por  

comprar algo para  

degustar en el granero o  comer alimentos  

agrícolas en casa frutas  dulces, limones agrios,  pimientos picantes, ¿las  verduras son deliciosas  o asquerosas?
