May's Theme: Space
Space...the final frontier! We have a lot happening at the library this month, including a very special guest speaker, calling in all the way from the International Space Station. Expand your mind and explore some galaxies far, far away and don't forget - you can checkout telescopes from the library!
Date & Time: Tuesday, May 9 @ 3:00pm-4:00pm
Description: You can checkout a working telescope through the library's catalog, but why not make your own too?! Using clean, plastic bottles, we will decorate our telescopes with paint, stickers, and glitter and cut holes in the bottom so that you can see through them. The library will have some bottles on hand, but if you have any sitting around in your recycling bin, we recommend you bring them.

Nicole is the first Native American woman to be in space and is currently based on the International Space Station. Join us for a virtual Zoom discussion, where Nicole will tell us what it's actually like in space, her path to becoming an astronaut and the challenges she faced as a Native American woman in the field. IPL is collecting questions for Nicole to answer during our Q&A, so if you have anything you would like to ask, just email your questions to ipl@ipl.org. Pre-registration is required, although there are no limits on the number of virtual attendants.
Staffing: 1 youth services librarian to moderate the discussion and 1 library staff member to manage and monitor the Zoom call and address any technology concerns.
Budget: n/a, Nicole has graciously donated her time.
Date & Time: Thursday, May 4 @ 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Description: Whether you've never seen Star Wars or you've seen it a million times, come join us in celebration of May the 4th and find out why everyone is talking about some guy named Luke's dad. IPL will be hosting a screening of the 1977 classic, Star Wars, complete with popcorn and red licorice light sabers. This is a great event for the whole family and the library has all additional Star Wars movies available for checkout!
Staffing: 1 library staff member.
Budget: $150 for snacks and movie license.
Come guess how many glow in the dark stars are in the jar! Winner takes home the jar contents and a book.
If you are unable to visit the library to guess in person, a picture of the jar and its contents is posted on IPL's Facebook page, and guesses can be submitted using our guessing form found here.
Good luck!
