August's Theme: Summer
Splash into the last month of summer! We will be wrapping up our summer reading program with a huge event to celebrate all of the reading you did this year. We will have food and music, and a performance and dance class from local West African dance company Diamano Coura. Congratulations on a summer of reading!!
Date & Time: Saturday, August 26 @ 11:00am-2:00pm
Description: You did it! Everyone here at IPL is so proud of what you have accomplished this summer. Come celebrate yourself and the end of summer with our biggest party yet! Food, music, final raffle prizes, and a special performance and dance class, from the West African dance company Diamano Coura.
Staffing: This is our largest event of the year, so it will be all hands on deck; at least 5 library staff members will be needed.
Budget: $200 for snacks and decorations and $500 for the performance fee.
Date & Time: Thursday, August 3 @ 2:00pm - 3:00pm
Description: It's a lot easier to make ice cream than you may think. All you need is ice, cream, salt, and a little science and you'll be eating ice cream in no time. The library will supply all the materials you need, just come prepared with strong arms to shake! shake! shake! This event can get a little sticky, so the event will take place outdoors.
Staffing: 2 library staff members to set-up and help manage the ingredients for younger kids.
Budget: $40 for cream, salt, ice, and Ziplock bags.
Date & Time: Tuesday, August 8 @ 11:00am - 2:00pm
Description: Ready, set, game! School is still out for summer, so come hang out at the library and play your favorite video games. We will have two projectors set-up, each with it's own gaming system and you can either play for fun, or sign-up to participate in our tournament. If you would like to enter the tournament, please register in-person or online so that we can put everyone into brackets. This event is for children of all ages, so there will be no violent or inappropriate games selected - mostly racing games and of course...Tetris! As a reminder, you can also check-out video games and gaming consoles through the library's catalog!
Staffing: 1 Youth Services Librarian and 1 additional library assistant.
Budget: $30 for prizes and $40 for snacks.
Date & Time: Tuesday, August 15 @ 3:00pm - 4:00pm
Description: It's still warm and the birds are out for summer! Come join us at the library to build your very own popsicle bird feeder. Our librarian and library assistant will help you construct your bird feeder and once it's dry, we will supply you with some bird seed and you can take your bird feeder home and start observing your neighborhood bird population. This project uses hot glue, so may not be suitable for little ones.
Staffing: 1 youth librarian to run the event and an additional library assistant to help with construction and the hot glue gun.
Budget: $30 for hot glue, bird seed, twine and popsicle sticks.
Date & Time: The whole month of August.
Description: When you're taking a break from completing your summer reading challenge, come down to the library and pick up a scavenger hunt form. They are located at all reference desks and include pictures and clues about items located throughout the library. If you can find all items, you get a prize! Just check off the items as you go and bring your completed sheet to the librarian when you're finished. We'll be hosting the scavenger hunt all month, so you can complete it over a single day or several - up to you!
Staffing: no additional staffing requirements; the librarian at the circulation desk will be responsible for handing out scavenger hunt sheets and giving our prizes.
Budget: $30 for prizes and maps.
Come guess how many M&Ms are in the jar! Winner takes home the jar contents and a book.
If you are unable to visit the library to guess in person, a picture of the jar and its contents is posted on IPL's Facebook page, and guesses can be submitted using our guessing form found here.
Good luck!
