June's Theme: Pride
June is a big month! Our Summer Reading 2023 is officially started and we encourage you to join us in all the fun. Take a look at our summer reading overview and even if you don't participate in the reading, you are welcome to join us for the events. As a reminder, the library also provides free lunch all summer long.
It is also National Pride Month and we will be celebrating Pride all month long at IPL. IPL is committed to serving every memeber of our community and we strive to make our library a safe space, inclusive of LGBTQ+ identities. We have lots of information and resources posted throughout the library for LGBTQ+ youth and all of our librarians are happy to answer any questions you may have. Happy reading and happy Pride!

Date & Time: Saturday, June 3 @11:00am-2:00pm
Description: Summer reading is here! This essential program aims to support all children with their reading, avoids the summer slide, and creates positive connections to reading and to the library; successful summer reading can lead to a lifetime love of independent reading (Library System of Lancaster Country, n.d.). Our kick-off celebration is a great way to learn about the program, how to track your reading, and to chat with librarians about book recommendations. We'll have music, food and a special performance by Bay Area balloon artist and magician, Mr. SHAP!
Staffing: This is a large event and will require 5 library staff members.
Budget: $150 for snacks and $300 for the performance fee. For the entire summer reading program, an additional $300 will be spent on books and prizes, to supplement donations already provided by the community and local businesses.
Date & Time: Wednesday, June 7 @ 6:00pm-7:00pm
Description: Come join us for one of our most popular events at the library - Drag Story Hour! Run by a local drag queen, these story hours are a great way to introduce children to the art of drag and is a way to show our community that drag belongs in libraries, as do our queer patrons. Our colleagues at the Alameda County Library said it best when they said, "Libraries are one of the few institutions that belong to all of us, equally. As a library, it is our responsibility to invite, celebrate, and take action to explicitly include marginalized communities. On the most visible level, drag storytime is an act of resilient joy, of public celebration, a rainbow welcome path through the stacks" (Chadwick, 2023). This event is popular, but there are no limits on attendance, just be sure to come early to grab a seat!
Staffing: 1 library worker to assist the performer and and patrons if needed.
Budget: $100 for performance fee.
Date & Time: Wednesday, June 14 @ 2:00pm-3:00pm (planning meeting); Saturday, June 24 @ 11:00am - 12:00pm (painting)
Description: IPL is committed to serving our LGBTQ+ population and we want that to be clear the moment you step foot in the library. This month, we will be painting one of the walls in our front hall with a mural celebrating all things Pride. Interested participants are invited to join our planning meeting to discuss ideas for the mural, with the final design being painted on June 24. If you would like to join the planning meeting, please email ipl@ipl.org.
Staffing: 1 youth librarian to run the planning committee, plus several library volunteers to assist on the mural painting day.
Budget: $100 for paints.
Date & Time: Tuesday, June 27 @ 6:00pm - 7:30pm
Description: Do you have something to say? This year, IPL is hosting the 1st Annual Pride Poetry slam and we want to hear from you. All month, students will work on their poetry submissions and we'll celebrate them all with a reception and open mic at the end of the month. Participants are encouraged to read their poems aloud, but it is not required. We are extremely lucky to have our local youth poet laureate for 2022, Nadia Elbgal, also perform at our reception.
Staffing: 3 library staff members to run and host the reception.
Budget: $150 for snacks during reception.
Come guess how many flags are in the jar! Winner takes home the jar contents and a book.
If you are unable to visit the library to guess in person, a picture of the jar and its contents is posted on IPL's Facebook page, and guesses can be submitted using our guessing form found here.
Good luck!
