The Chapel of Silence

by Mollie Plants

This module was published as the special attraction in the center of the fifth anniversary issue of DRAGON magazine (issue #50, June 1981, pgs 35-42). It won first place in the Basic Division of the second International Dungeon Design Contest. It is notable for including Dexterity stats for the monsters in accordance with the Holmes rules for initiative. The only other module published by TSR with such stats is the early printings of B2.

Trivia (caution, some spoilers)

Room 2-61 has a Scroll of Healing. No further description is given, but this appears to be a Scroll with a "Potion Spell" per the Scroll table on page 34 of the Holmes Basic rulebook.

This Basic level adventure features monsters and treasure more commonly associated with higher level play; for example, a Vampire and a Ring of Wishes, both found in Holmes Basic but later relegated to Expert Set.

The last page of the module includes a list of the other prize-winning modules in the Basic Division. These include:

2nd - The Creature of Rhyl by Kevin Knuth. This was subsequently published in DRAGON #55.

3rd - Ziggurat of the Adepts by Susan K. Topa. Unpublished.

4th - Adventures in the Far Isles by Paul Haase. Unpublished.

5th - Harrowhouse by T. Scott Kennedy. Unpublished.

Mollie Plants also co-authored The Treasure of Barlawn, published earlier in Judges Guild Journal 16.
