Using the Internet to watch "International TV"... because you live abroad.
Understanding how it all works:-
When you attach your device to the internet, your device is assigned an IP Address. IP Address (Internet Protocol Address) is a set of numbers which uniquely identifies every device on a network (like the internet). Typically, an IP Address might look like this :- 209.123.456.789 (Usually, the first 3 numbers will indicate the physical location, eg. USA).
DNS (Domain Name System) is a system which associates words or names (Domain Names) to the correct IP Address. This is because it is easier to remember names instead of a numbers. With DNS, we can type in www.google.com instead of 209.85.128.255 numbers. The DNS lists are kept on DNS Servers.
The broadcast of all videos (tv shows or movies) is restricted by its licensing. Typically, a TV network is only licensed to broadcast a TV programme in its country of operation (not internationally). Internet TV allows the TV programme or movie to be streamed across the internet to a device at home. Video On-Demand (VOD) service providers, like NetFlix, are licensed to stream those TV programmes or movies in certain countries.
To watch the videos from a VOD provider, you will need to be a subscriber (pay money). Example: NetFlix
If you want to watch videos streamed from one country but you (& your computer) are abroad (in a different country) then you should subscribe to a VPN service.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a private network but transmitted over the public internet. Your place of employment will usually run a Private Network for the office staff to use only. Also check that the VPN operator has a Server in the country within the stream coverage of the VOD provider. Example: If you want to watch NetFlix from the USA, make sure your VPN has a Server in the USA. In this example, NetFlix streams the video to the Server in the USA. This works for the VOD provider because the Server has an IP Address in the USA. Next, the Server relays the video stream to your computer (in a different country).
Beyond streaming videos from another country, VPN services also give enhanced security and encryption for your internet use.
If you want to stream videos from another country but to watch video on a mobile device (phone or tablet), then you will need to download the correct App for the mobile device. Although you can watch NetFlix directly on your computer, you need to install the NetFlix App on your mobile device to watch its videos.
Typically, the VOD app for mobile devices is only available to users from the countries they operate in. To download NetFlix App from the USA, you will need to login with a user-account with (store) location in the USA. If your user-account store is not located in the right country, the easy way is to create a new user account. Usually, this will require another email address.
For Android devices, you will need to create a Google account. For Apple devices, you will need to create an Apple ID. Select the correct "store location". Creating the Apple ID is more elaborate and you may need to purchase a "country specific" online version of iTunes Gift Card (instead of a Credit Card), as popular with many gamers.
If you want to stream videos from another country but to watch on Apple TV or Smart TV, then you will need Smart DNS.
DNS is a look-up directory to find stuff on the internet. Smart DNS is where the DNS is altered so that you (the user) will appear to be in a different geographical location.
