From 1999 to 2002, we were fortunate to be involved in the Little League Soccer in Garden International School, Kuala Lumpur. The Little League Soccer has been defunct for a while now. Luckily, I managed to find the back-up web-site files. So here it is... in all its former glory.
Welcome to the Garden Little League Soccer organisation for the children of the Garden International School of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Although this non-profit league is sanctioned by the school (and uses the school's fields plus other facilities), Garden Little League Soccer is managed and operated by a group of parents on a voluntary basis. The League's intent is to help develop the children's soccer skills, teamwork and sportsmanship. More importantly, it is an avenue for the children to have fun and enjoy themselves in a safe school environment. â—Ź School Year Sep'1999 ~ Jul'2000 : Summary of the Season for Group "Years 1,2&3".

Basic Information
The Garden Little League Soccer was formed with the approval of the school in April 2000. Currently, the League only applies to children (boys and girls) from Year 1 to Year 4.
Little League Soccer sessions are held on Sundays. Sessions are organised into 2 groups: Years 1&2, and, Years 3&4. The session for Years 1&2 is from 9:00am to 10:00am. The session for Years 3&4 is from 9:30am to 10:30am.
The one-hour soccer session is basically utilised as (a) 30 minutes of skills training, followed by, (b) 30 minutes of playing a soccer match. Currently, there are 4 soccer teams for Years 1&2 and another 4 teams for Years 3&4.
Garden Little League has two soccer "seasons" per year. Basically, the teams are reorganised and players reshuffled every half school-year. This is done to equalise the teams so that they are similarly skilled (ie no dominant teams).
In the beginning portion of a season, the soccer matches played will be practice games only (where the scores are not recorded). However, the last 6 matches of a season will be proper "league matches" (where scores are recorded).
Notes For Parents Please note that the League cannot exist without parents' participation the whole year round. Please ensure your children attend little league soccer every week to ensure continuity of the games. In the event your child has lost interest or would like to drop out for whatever reason, please inform one of the co-ordinators of this so that a replacement can be made to. Also, if you are going to be absent, please inform your respective coaches or one of the co-ordinators.
In the event of very heavy rain early on Sunday morning (around 8:30am), soccer will be cancelled. The coaches of the respective teams may or may not inform the team players of this. Parents should use their own discretion / judgement -or- call the co-ordinators to find out.

Garden Little League Soccer : http://www.angelfire.com/space/gis_lls/year2002.htm Links â—Ź Back to Main Page â—Ź The Garden Little League Soccer was formed in April 2000 as a non-profit venture. This league was formed for children from Year 1 to Year 4 (for both boys and girls). Although the league is sanctioned by the school, it is actually organised and managed by a group of parents. The league is intended not only to develop their skills in this particular sport but also to enhance their "sportsmanship" and discipline amongst the children involved. More importantly, it is meant to provide an avenue for the children to have fun and enjoy themselves in a school environment. Little League Soccer is held on Sundays. Years 1&2 will play from 9:00am to 10:00am while Years 3&4 will play from 9:30am to 10:30am. The one-hour format for soccer is basically utilised as a half hour of skills training followed by a half hour of playing a soccer match. Currently, there are 4 soccer teams for Years 1&2 and another 4 teams for Years 3&4.
Garden Little League has two soccer "seasons" per year. Basically, the teams are reorganised and players reshuffled every half school-year (approximately every one and a half school-terms). This is done to "equalise" the teams so that they are similarly skilled (ie no dominant teams).
Early on in a season, most of the soccer matches played will be practice games only (where the scores are not recorded). However, the last 6 matches of a season will be proper "league matches" (in these matches, winning does count).
In the event it is raining heavily early Sunday morning (approximately from 8:15am), soccer will be automatically cancelled. The coaches of the respective teams may or may not inform the team players of this. Parents should use their own discretion / judgement or call the co-ordinators to find out.
Please note that the League cannot exist without parents' participation the whole year round. Please ensure your children attend little league soccer every week to ensure continuity of the games. In the event your child has lost interest or would like to drop out for whatever reason, please inform one of the coordinators of this so that a replacement can be made to. Also, if you are going to be absent, please inform your respective coaches or one of the coordinators.

~ END OF DOCUMENT ~
â—Ź Time Allocation for a session â—Ź Skills Training segment â—Ź Soccer Match segment â—Ź Our Rules & Regulations The aim of the league is to teach the children how to play the game (ie the rules and regulations of soccer).
However, beyond just playing the game, the real challenge is to (a) develop their ball-control skills, (b) help them learn about field-positions, and (c) instil teamwork. These are the elements needed for building an effective team. It's not about winning; it's about team-building!
But above and beyond that, we should always nurture a culture based on (a) safety, (b) fair play and (c) sportmanship. Think of this as a code of conduct. We're not just making better players: We're developing better people!
TIME ALLOCATION Sessions are organised into 2 groups: Years 1&2, and, Years 3&4. Each group is allocated one hour and this is basically broken into 2 separate 30 minute segments:
â—Ź 30 mins. - Skills Training
â—Ź 30 mins. - Soccer Match
The Year 3&4 group have their skills training during the Year 1&2 group soccer match. So as not to delay the Year 3&4 group matches, it is important for the Year 1&2 group to finish their sessions in a reasonably timely manner.
SKILLS TRAINING
The format for Skills Training is not rigid and is determined by the coach. However, here is a recommended guide:
â—Ź 2 mins - warm-up exercises
â—Ź 5 mins - Exercise 1 : Close Control - Dribbling, Stopping, Turning
â—Ź 5 mins - Exercise 2 : Passing - Distance, Accuracy
â—Ź 2 mins - ---break---
â—Ź 3 mins - Discussion on Field Positions and Teamwork
â—Ź 6 mins - Team Interaction : Fun & Games
â—Ź 5 mins - Exercise 3 : Other Skills - Power, Scoring, Heading, Corners, Throw-Ins... etc
â—Ź 2 mins - ---break---
Warm Up Exercises :
This is really just stretching exercises which help to avoid injury. Simple stretches are best like touching-your-toes, swinging your arms and standing-on-one-leg.
Close Control :
Dribbling is basically "jogging" with the ball. Using the inside foot sections, just tap the ball from left foot to right foot and back while walking. When they can dribble quite quickly, we move to "dribble & stop" and "dribble & turn". Teach them to stop the ball with their foot on top of the ball. Next, teach them to do a full turn-around by stopping the ball, pulling the ball behind them, and then turning around.
80% of the time, they should dribble using the inside foot section. For some variation, 10% of the time, they should use the front of the foot and, 10% of the time, they should use the outside foot-section.
Passing :
Basically, arrange the children into 2 lines about 3 - 6 metres apart, and make them pass the ball to their counterpart on the other line. The important aspect here is accuracy. Start off at a close distance between the lines but, as they become more comfortable, increase the distance. Let them experiment using the inside foot section or the front of the foot to kick the ball. Both are just as effective so let the children develop their own preferance. For variation, make them use the other foot as well.
Discussion on Field Positions and Teamwork :
Basically we want the children to become accustomed to the names of the different field positions and what each player is supposed to do.
The best tool for this is a pen and a sheet of paper. Draw a rectangle (the field), draw the goal posts at the top and bottom and your goal post is always the bottom. From bottom to top, mark out the goalkeeper, the defenders, the mid-fielders and the strikers. From left to right, explain the area called the left-wing, the centre and the right-wing.
If you have 10 players, you might want to spread them out evenly into a 3-by-3 grid plus goalkeeper.
As a discussion, I like to do something like this : Ask them how to we score a goal, and draw an arrow from the centre-striker into the opposition-goal. Then ask them how that centre-striker got the ball, and draw an arrow from the right-striker to the centre-striker (and draw the same from the left side too). Next, ask then how the right-striker (or left) got the ball, and draw an arrow from the right-midfielder to the right-striker. Then ask then how the right-midfielder got the ball, and draw an arrow from the right-defender to the right-midfielder. Next, ask then how the right-defender got the ball, and draw an arrow from the goalkeeper to the right-defender.
I know this is very simplistic but you are instilling the concept of a game plan. Explain that every player has a role to play, and together this is how a team works. It is important to keep explaining this every session.
Fun & Games :
The league has a few copies of the "National Curriculum : Major League Soccer Camps - Coaches Edition : Munchkins Program" available for coaches to borrow. In it, there are many mini-games you can use to develop soccer skills.
I have made my own game, Soccer Piggy, based on "pig in the middle" or "monkey" which is similar to "catch". Every game needs 3 - 4 players so split the children into groups accordingly. Every game has a "piggy". The object of the game is to pass the ball around without "piggy" getting it. The person who accidentally gave the ball to "piggy" usually becomes the next "piggy". There are special rules for soccer piggy : (a) "piggy" can only walk and can't run, and (b) when a player gets the ball, he/ she can only touch the ball 5 times and then he/ she must pass it.
In the beginning, try to slow the game so that everyone has time to think. Keep reminding them that it is not just up to the player with the ball. The players without the ball really have to make themselves "available" if they want to get the ball.
Other Skills :
This part is really the leftover stuff not covered earlier. This includes skills like throw-ins, corners, tackling. There are a few basic skills to teach like how to kick a ball low and how to kick a ball high and perhaps a using your chest or head on the ball. But beyond that, this part should cover weaknesses you (the coach) sees during the practice games.
You might, for example, find that your players can smoothly dribble and pass the ball all the way to the strikers but discover that they don't know how to score a goal. In this case, just have a few sessions of "scoring a goal" by getting them to kick the ball as hard as they can into a fence. This one always seems to be a favourite.
SOCCER MATCH
There are 2 types of matches : (1) Practice Matches, and, (2) League Matches.
Practice Matches
In a practice match, we basically split the field into 3 zones: defender zone, midfielder zone and striker zone. Obviously, your team's striker zone is the other team's defender zone. During the game, the players must stay within their zone until reassigned. Assign different players to different zones to get a feel for what is required from them. Goalkeepers should also be rotated. Most important is to get the players to spread out within their zone and not clump together.
League Matches
League matches are matches that count toward a team's ranking. Each team will play against every team twice. So if there are 4 teams, there will be 6 league matches (ie your team plays against the other 3 teams twice).
The "ranking" will be decided on the number of wins by each team. If there is a tie, then the tied teams will be ranked by the number of draws. If there is still a tie, then the tied teams will be ranked by goal difference amounts.
For example, team-A and team-B both have 4 wins each while team-C and team-D have only 1 win. There are 2 ties. Team-A and team-B both have 1 draw each while team-C has 2 draws and team-D has none. At this point, team-A & team-B are still tied while team-C is 3rd and team-D is 4th. Looking at goal differences, team-A has a value of 3 (they scored 8 goals and let in 5 goals) while team-B has a value of 5 (they scored 8 goals and let in 3 goals). In this case, team-A is 2nd and team-B is 1st.
By the way, there are no losers in Little League... everyone is a winner. The team ranking also has appropriate awards (given at the awards ceremony):
Rank - Award Name
â—Ź 1 - Champion Award
â—Ź 2 - Teamwork Award
â—Ź 3 - Skills Award
â—Ź 4 - Sportsmanship Award
RULES & REGULATIONS
â—Ź Pitch Size : one quarter of the existing pitch at the school field
â—Ź Goal Size : 3.6 metres wide and 1.2 metre high. In the absence of full goals, we will use cones to mark the posts. Goals can be made narrower (esp. for younger children) but not narrower than 2.5 metres. Referees should check that goals are the same size.
â—Ź Duration : Game = 24 minutes ; made up of 2 halves of 12 minutes each with a 5 minute break in between.
â—Ź Players : In any match, both teams will have the same number of players on the field at the same time. If one team has less players than the other, then the other team should drop the number of players to match but also rotate players (perhaps at half-time) such that every member gets to play.
â—Ź Substitutions : Unlimited number of player substitutions can be done throughout the game. Please signal to the referee prior to doing so.
â—Ź Kick-Off : The game is always started with a kick-off at the centre of the halfway-line. This also occurs after any goals or after half-time. Defending players should be at least 4m from the spot.
â—Ź Offside : There is NO offside in the game.
â—Ź Ball Out : When the ball goes out beyond the sidelines, how the ball is re-inserted into play again will depend on the Year-Groups:
- Year 1 & 2 - restart the game with a Kick-In (not a Throw-In).
- Year 3 & 4 - restart the game with a Throw-In.
Before the ball is re-inserted into play, please ensure that defending players are at least 4m from the spot.
â—Ź Goal-Kick : [This occurs when the attacking team causes the ball to goes beyond the end-line] Before the goal-kick is taken, please ensure that defending players are at least 4m from the placed ball.
â—Ź Corners : [This occurs when the defending team causes the ball to goes beyond the end-line] Corners are kicked in (as per tradition). Before the corner-kick is taken, please ensure that defending players are at least 4m from the placed ball. The ball placement should not be further than 0.75m from the corner.
â—Ź Penalties : In the event of any fouls or other interruptions, all awarded penalties shall be "indirect free kicks" ; the ball cannot be directly kicked into goal. For indirect free-kicks, the ball should not be placed nearer than 4m from any goal-post. Before the free-kick is taken, please ensure that defending players are at least 4m from the placed ball.
â—Ź Misconduct : Misconduct and purposeful fouls should be discouraged and referees should issue warnings. In the event of continuing misconduct or refusal to follow instructions, referee may "send off" offending player for 3 minutes.
NOTE :
- The referee has to always demonstrate consistent and unbiased decisions. But regardless of the outcome or circumstances, the referee is always right.
- The conduct of the team's players, supporters etc., are the responsibility of the relevant coaches.
STANDARD MEASUREMENTS (for Comparison)
Basically, Little League uses appx half the width and appx half the length of a standard field (ie. quarter pitch). To simplify measurements, Little League uses half of any standard distance (where practical). Below are the accepted standard measurements for Soccer.
FIELD SIZE â—Ź A typical school soccer field fits within a 400m running track. Length = 100m : Width = 63.66m. However, variations are acceptable within certain limits.
Acceptable Field Size â—Ź Length = 90m ~ 120m (100yd ~ 130yd) : Width = 45m ~ 90m (50yd ~ 100yd).
International Field Size â—Ź Length = 100m ~ 110m (110yd ~ 120 yd) : Width = 64m ~ 75m (70yd ~ 80yd).
FREE KICK ZONE â—Ź Before the free-kick is taken, defending players must be 9.15m (10yd) away from the ball (free-kick spot).
CENTRE CIRCLE â—Ź Radius = 9.15m (10yd)
GOAL SIZE â—Ź Width = 7.32m (8yd) : Height = 2.44m (8ft)
GOAL AREA (Box) â—Ź Length = 18.29m (20yd) : Width = 5.49m (6yd) {area from which Goal-Kicks are taken}.
PENALTY AREA (Box) â—Ź Length = 40.23m (44yd) : Width = 16.46m (18yd) {area where Goalkeeper can use hands to hold ball}.
PENALTY MARK (Spot) â—Ź Distance = 11m (12yd) from Goal-Line (centred)
PENALTY ARC â—Ź Arc is drawn outside Penalty Area using radius of 9.15m (10yd) centred from the Penalty Mark.
CORNER ARC â—Ź Radius = 0.91m (1yd)

â—Ź How to Start & Manage your own League â—Ź Sample Registration Form â—Ź Grading & Sorting Players into Teams â—Ź Sample Letterhead â—Ź Sample Standard Letters How to Start & Manage your own League
The beginning reference point is the school itself: You will require the blessing/ permission of the school. In addition, you will need the school's permission to use their field(s). A regular day and time will need to be set when the school isn't using the field(s) but convenient enough for the parents/ children to attend.
You will need to estimate items like (a) How much should each child pay? (b) How many children will join? (c) How many children in each team? (d) How many teams will there be? (e) How many sponsors do you need to obtain? (f) How much should each sponsor pay? This is needed to arrive at a feasible budget. You will then need to find out the cost of equipment (diff. size soccer balls) and the cost of outfitting a child (usu. T-shirt with printing, shorts & socks). If you intend to give out prizes / trophies, you need to budget for those items too.
Meet the school's Accounts Department to arrange for separate accounting. In general, any sponsorship cheques should be made payable to the school. You will need to keep a Cash-Book of expenses and receipts. Perhaps every quarter, you will need to hand-over the receipts to the Accounts Dept and obtain an updated Balance. Keep a Petty Cash box. Large amounts of excess cash (if any) should be handed over to the school.
If possible, ask the school for some storage space (preferably near the field).

GRADING & SORTING Players into Teams
The reason for grading and sorting players is to assemble teams which are more or less equal in terms of skill level. To achieve this, the players have to be graded in an objective manner. For Little League Soccer, a simple system of points can be used as follows :
POINTS - SKILL LEVEL 5 pts - Outstanding 4 pts - Above Average 3 pts - Average 2 pts - Below Average 1 pts - Very Poor
For Little League Soccer, there are only a few skills/ aspects which are relevant and need to be graded :
SKILL/ ASPECT IMPORTANCE/ WEIGHT a. Dribbling Important b. Kick Power Important c. Pass Accuracy Important d. Heading & Chesting Half e. Running Endurance Less f. Attitude Less
Skill/ Aspect (e) & (f) can be omitted to save time because they are less important and fairly subjective.
In Garden Little League Soccer, grading is done by setting up 4 skill-stations to individually assess Dribbling, Kick Power, Pass Accuracy and Heading/ Chesting. Each skill-station will have a skill-assessor [an adult]. The children are organised into 4 groups (each group will have a group-head [adult]). Each group is in turn taken to each skill-station.
The skill-assessor at each station will award the points. The group-heads carry around the Grading Assessment Forms for their group and write down the points given. Having finished all 4 skill-stations, the group-heads then assess the individual children in their group for Running Endurance and Attitude.
SKILL-STATION SET-UP
DRIBBLING - This is set up with 6 cones or markers laid out about 1 metre apart in a straight line. The children are expected to dribble the ball between the cones (slalom). Generally, children can this with little mistakes but sometimes at a very slow pace. The combination of accuracy and speed is the indicator of their skill/ ability.
KICK POWER - Set up a start-point with 2 cones or markers about 1 metre apart. Place the ball in between and ask each child to kick the ball as hard as they can. We are only looking at power here (not accuracy).
PASS ACCURACY - Set up a start-point (as above). About 6 metres away, lay out 8 markers in a line about 0.5m apart and ensure that the middle gap [between 4th & 5th markers] is centred with the start-point. The aim is to kick the ball through the middle-gap. The ball through the middle-gap gets 5 points; through the next outer markers [btwn 3rd & 6th markers] gets 4 points; throught the next outer markers [btwn 2nd & 7th markers] gets 3 points; through the extreme end-markers gets 2 points, and; outside of the end-markers gets 1 point.
HEADING/ CHESTING - This is where the skill-assessor just marks a set distance for the children to line up. The skill-assessor then slowly throws the ball for the child to "head" back to the assessor. Then the assessor slowly throws the ball for the child to "chest" back to the assessor.
