Action Committee

Action for April General Meeting 2022:

We will be hearing from Dr. Ramos about the culture in Cape Verde. There are currently fundraisers to help build playgrounds for children there. There will be a cash donation collected at the meeting to help with shipping of essential equipment to help build the playgrounds.

Details from Debby K. - "The Cabo Verdeans United Organization is dedicated to building at least one playground on each of the nine inhabited islands that make up Cape Verde. Lynn's cousin is secretary for the organization and will be going there with others to build the next one in a few months. What child doesn't love a playground? Our donation will help bring smiles and laughter to children and help them grow through play. Checks should be made out to the organization named above. "

Update for March Meeting Action: Thanks for all the generous donations of candy and treat to help us put together Easter "basket" bags for deserving children.

Update: January 26, 2022

Things are still in flux right now, but if all goes well, and if we are allowed to meet at the Milford Senior Center in March, we will be asking for donations to fill Easter baskets to be distributed by Covenant to Care, I believe. Details to follow.

December 2021

This year we are collecting for a different population. Instead of our usual collection to benefit young children, we are asking folks to donate personal care products such as adult incontinence products to serve our aging population that are in need of such necessities.

November 2021

We will do our annual food collection to help fill pantry shelves. We will probably pool our collection with foods collected by the Milford Scout Troops to ensure good distribution.

October 2021

We are collecting new and/or gently used warm clothing to be distributed by the Bridgeport Relief Agency. We will be meeting a Walnut Beach Pavilion, and I assume Debby or Lynn will have their car open in the parking lot to receive donations.

Evelyn has made several of our usual fleece hats (finished by your Steering Committee) to keep heads warm in winter. I guess our warm fleece caps have been spotted warding off the cold winter chill in many areas around the urban area.

Our service project this month is the same as we ran a year ago.. The VFW post of Devon, CT contacted Debby K. about an annual event called the Day of Hospitalized Vets. This year it will be bigger than ever and will include many women veterans as well as men. At the end of the event, each participant goes home with a goody bag. Since there will be more participants than ever, the VFW is reaching out to civic organizations to collect donations of books, games, puzzles, candy, toiletries, etc. so they will have ample supplies to fill the gifts. Thanks again, Ladies, for your wonderful generosity.

October 2017

As summer winds down, and you start putting away your summer clothes and pull out your warm woolies, weed through items that are gently used but that you no longer wear and bring them to our October 9 WRR meeting.

Our annual warm winter clothing drive will help to increase the comfort of many individuals less fortunate than we. Also, on September 26, from 2-4, we will be sewing fleece hats at Evelyn's that will keep lots of folks heads warm this coming winter.

Once again, ladies, You Did It! Thanks for your generosity.

August 2017

Our service project this month will be our annual collection of school supplies to go to deserving children in the local area.

We are also collecting food to go this month to Milford Senior Center.

Thanks again to our generous members for an outstanding response to our call for school supplies. In addition, we also collected a significant amount of food for Beth El. Fantastic!

July 2017

This from Debby K.

Action for this month will be a collection for Covenant to Care. This is the organization through which we give the Easter baskets. It is an outreach service linking people or organizations to a Dept of Children and Family Services social worker.. The organization or persons agree to a covenant in which they provide special or emergency needs to children in that social worker's caseload. This augments the provisions of the State, fostering safer more stable homes.

Our social worker, Isabelle, has expressed a dire need for diapers, infants items, and clothing. They need diapers of all sizes, summer clothing of all sizes (new or used), and infant shampoo/lotion/wipes. These are the items not covered by State assistance and are often requested by their clients. The social workers have no way to provide these items except for the generosity of people like you. So gather up your grandchildren's outgrown clothing from last summer, grab a package of diapers and/or a baby need and help children who are in extreme poverty.

Debby

Thanks once again to our members for their terrific generosity.

June 2017

Our speaker will be Karen Lombardi from the Woodbridge Animal Center, so it's fitting that this month we collect pet food and supplies.

Our monthly food donations will go to the Milford Senior Center.

Thanks, everyone, for your generous donations.

May 2017

While it was announced that there would be just the regular food collection, Debby learned that there was a real need at Beth El for lots of specific items such a paper goods, etc. Ladies! You came through again with an extremely generous response to the call. Thank you all.

April 2017

Our service project this month is an exciting one. The VFW post of Devon, CT contacted Debby K. about an annual event called the Day of Hospitalized Vets. This year it will be bigger than ever and will include many women veterans as well as men. The event will take place on May 7 in Rocky Hill. At the end of the event, each participant goes home with a goody bag. Since there will be more participants than ever, the VFW is reaching out to civic organizations to collect donations of books, games, puzzles, candy, toiletries, etc. so they will have ample supplies to fill the gifts. Thanks you in advanced for your continued generosity.

What a great response, ladies! Debbie got a thank you note from the organizers of the event, and they said our donation was the most generous and made what was a good event, fantastic!

March 2017

We will be filling all the wonderful bunny boxes (finishing touches to be added by members at the meeting) with individually wrapped candies, small toys, etc. Please bring some things to help us fill the "baskets" that will bring joy to children who might not otherwise have an Easter treat.

Also, non-perishable food items are always welcome. This month any collected food items will help stock the pantry at Beth-El.

Great Job, Ladies! Debby will deliver the baskets to Covenant To Care, a wonderful organization, which will distribute them to area children who would otherwise go without.

Thanks so much to all who brought in new or gently used warm clothes for our winter clothing drive. It is amazing how many items are donated each year that help keep others who are less fortunate warmer this winter. Some of our members under the tutelage of Evelyn Duffner also sewed over 70 warm fleece caps. Way to go ladies! And, lest we forget, we also delivered dozens of small fleece pillows to Vicki Manning, founder of Kisses from Katie non-profit organization, which is dedicated to providing resources to critically ill children.

Thanks to Debby K. for getting all the pet food and supply donations to the pound in Milford. Thanks to all who donated! Debby sent us this picture and wrote:

"We had a great assortment of dog and cat food along with treats and toys. A few blankets and a bed made our contribution complete. Our four legged friends will appreciate what you have given them."

May 2016

Our May meeting at Case Memorial was very well attended. This year's diaper drive, thanks to Debby K, went off without a hitch. In fact, many of you dropped off your donations directly to Debby's trunk before heading up to the meeting. Good planning, Deb.

Thanks to all of our members for your continued generosity.

April 2016

We had over 40 women in attendance at our WRR meeting this past Monday. Thanks to all for their generous donations to benefit Beth-El. Thanks also to our wonderful presenter who helped us understand all the wonderful work they do to help those less fortunate at the center. Many of our members volunteer at the center on a regular basis. Bravo to all those volunteers who allow this important community service to continue their work.

March 2016

Our service project for the WRR March meeting, creating and providing many Easter baskets that will be delivered to Covenant to Care, was very successful. Thanks to all who took such time to transform the boutique tissue boxes into darling bunnies as well at to all who donated candy and small toys with which to fill them. On Monday evening, we arrived to find several stations set up where our members could streamline the process of filling and wrapping the baskets. Everyone got to work, and the baskets were filled and wrapped in record time. Great work, everyone.

January 2016

Thanks to all our generous members for such great participation in our accessory swap. Many of us went home with new "treasures." We were able to repurpose items that were no longer as appealing to us. And My Sisters' Place in Ansonia, CT benefited from all the remaining accessories.

We also collected food and warm clothing which will be welcomed by many.

December 2015

UPDATE: We raised over $500 including a pledge to match up to $100 from one of our members! That was a wonderful response. Thanks to all our members for their generosity in making the holiday happy for others less fortunate.

At the WRR December meeting, instead of our usual collection for Toys for Tots, we collected monetary donations which will be given in the form of gift cards to a needy family. Our family was selected by The Department of Human Services and Milford Youth and Family Services, City of Milford. We are helping a mom and her young son. With a matching donation of over $100 from one of our members, we will be able to buy a number of gift cards for our family to give them a very happy holiday. Thanks to Lorraine R. for all she does to promote and run this wonderful service. She how she is beaming over the amount collected! (Sorry, the webpage won't let me rotate the image.)

November 2015

Besides celebrating our 8th birthday, WRR had a very good response for our annual Thanksgiving food drive. Thanks to all who donated. Here is a note from Debbie Kasowitz with details of how the food wil be distributed. Thanks, Deb.

The food collected at our November meeting will be taken to Wasson Field on Friday, November 14. The Milford Boy and Girl Scouts are hosting their 10th "Thanks 4 Giving Food Drive". This is the major food drive for the Thanksgiving season and involves all food distribution charities in the town. The scouts will collect and sort food donations received at the field as well as local supermarkets over a 48 hour period.

We collected an impressive assortment of food, enough to fill the entire trunk of a car.

Thank you all for your generous support. Deb

October 2015

What great generosity from our members! Our October warm clothes donation brought in many items that will surely be appreciated, especially now with colder temperatures appearing so early in the season. Thanks so much to Lynn for dropping them off at Bridgeport Rescue Mission.

The donation also included a whole box filled with warm, cozy fleece hats sewn by our own WRR members under Evelyn's expert tutelage.

September 2015

Thanks so much for the donation of shoes for our September collection. Debbie said we collected 62 pair to be donated to the non-profit Rerun Shoes. Thanks to all who donated and to Debbie for organizing and delivering the shoes to a collection point at Hawley-Lane Shoes in Orange.
