Dragons are beasts that vary in size and intelligence depending on sub-species they fall into. All dragons have scales covering their bodies. They have a long protruding snout with nostrils located on the end. All dragons also have a thick, leathery fringe around their neck that extends when the dragon feels threatened or is trying to show dominance. It is this fringe that identifies dragons as a singular species. Most dragons are omnivorous and avoid trouble with humans tending to keep to themselves.
Common Dragons of Arascon
Great Dragons
Great Dragons are the largest of the common dragon species. They are on average about 30 feet in length (not including their tail which is used as a balance and can up to another 10-15 feet to their length) and weight about 2 tons. Their coloration is generally a dark green or brown with black and tan spots. They stand on four powerful legs. Their feet have sharp claws on the end of each of their four toes. On the back of their legs and down their spines are spines that can lay flush against their skin or rise up defensively. Great Dragons have poison sacks in their mouth. They release the venom when they bite. The Great Dragon is also known for spitting up gastric acids on those who threaten it. This acid is deadly and will melt most living matter. The great dragon is fairly fast for its size, but a swift horse can out distance it without too much trouble, however, a man on foot would easily be overcome.
Landslider
The Landslider is known for the eight short legs it has. When it moves, it looks like it is sliding along the ground. It has an average length of about 15 feet and weight about 1 ton. It has two tails, each one able to move independently of the other. At the end of each of the tails is a long, pointed, razored, bony protrusion. These protrusions are highly prized by warriors because they can be made into swords. Landsliders are usually light tan or brown in color, allowing them to blend into grasses and ground terrain. Aside from the tail weapons it possesses, it too has the ability to spit its gastric acids at opponents. It rises up its head to do so much like a cobra. Landsliders are very fast and incredibly territorial. However, their scales are fairly tender and easy to cut. On the other hand, their underbelly is incredibly thick and tough.
Redwood Spotted Dragon
The Redwood Spotted dragon is very similar to the Great Dragon except that it is roughly a third of the size. Its coloration varies from brown to red and it has tan or yellow spots. Like its cousin the Great Dragon, it too has spines that can either lay flush or stand on end. Unlike its cousin, its spines are poisonous. It has a poisonous bite and can spit gastric acids. It is a territorial dragon that keeps to forested areas. They generally travel in small groups of two to eight. Most dragonskin leather is made from Redwood Spotted dragon. They are most common in the Red Druid Wood.
Rockflyer
Common to the mountains, this is the only dragon with wings. It cannot fly, but it can glide. Its bones are light and flexible which makes up for its size. The Rockflyer is about 7 feet in length and has a wingspan of 10 feet. Its wings are made from the same tough, leathery skin as its fringe. Its neck has a large air sack that it can use to inflate itself, helping it to stay aloft. By adding small amounts of acid to its air sack, it can produce clouds of fiery gas which acts as its main defense. The Rockflyer has no frontal arms; instead, small fingers are connected to the ends of its wings in a manner similar to bats. Its legs are quite strong and can be used to launch itself into the air. Rockflyer are usually grey or black and keep to mountainous areas.
Common Dragon
The Common Dragon is not only the smallest dragon, but also the most common and docile. It is about five feet in length and weighs about the same as a large horse. Their body is long and slender and they have thin, but strong legs. Along its spine is a leathery fringe that goes from the top of its head to the tip of its tail. Aside from the claws on each of its feet, the common dragon has very little to threaten anyone with. The common dragon's coloration depends on where it is from, but usually they are anything from yellow to red. Some even have stripes or spots. They are the most intelligent of the dragon species and as such, in some parts of Arascon, they are used as beasts of burden or mounts.
Rare Dragons of Arascon
Evening Mother Dragon
The Evening Mother Dragon is a massive, intelligent dragon. These very rare dragons live in mountains and come out at night to hunt. They are solitary creatures that when fully grown are estimated to be about 50 feet in length. The scales of this dragon are a dark purple and crimson and has been likened to the evening sunset. These dragons, unlike the common dragon, can truly fly. It is hypothesized that they are kept aloft by a combination of magic and air in their massive lungs. These dragons hibernate for hundreds of years at a time, generally only coming out of hibernation to eat. It takes them about a month to gather enough food so they can return to hibernation. In this week, if they find another dragon of their species, they mate. Generally, this species of dragon takes about a century to gestate before being born. While this is a large and fearsome looking dragon, it feeds on wilkwood and fluft. To see an Evening Mother Dragon in flight is considered extremely good luck.
Blood Dragon
The Blood Dragon is by far the most dangerous of all dragon species, rare or common. Unlike the other dragons, this dragon feeds only on meat. Luckily, it is exceedingly rare in Arascon, though rumors say that it is much more common in the deserts Rosdese. The hide of the Blood Dragon is dark red, which, along with its food preferences, is where it gets its name. Many Blood Dragons are also cannibalistic, feeding off of other dragon species. The Blood Dragon has a larger fringe than the other dragons, at least relative to its size. On average, the Blood Dragon is about the same size as a Common Great Dragon. Unlike the Great Dragon, the Blood Dragon has four wings that work in unison to keep it aloft in flight. Matching the four wings, the dragon also has four eyes, two on the front of its face and one on either side, giving it a wide field of vision. The eldest of the Blood Dragons are rumored to be able to speak.
The Feathered Dragon
The Feathered Dragon is also called the Gypsy Dragon. These extremely rare dragons are always seen in pairs. Most of their 20 foot body is covered in multi-colored feathers. Their white under belly, fringe and face are the only things left uncovered by the feathers. Because of this coloring, they are considered sacred to Aviva. The Feathered Dragon feeds off of grains, fruits and namarggons. Feathered Dragons, like other rare dragons, can fly. The large feathers of the gypsy dragon are considered lucky charms and very rare. To see a lone Feathered Dragon is an omen of coming tragedy. To see a pair flying together means that you will soon fall in love.
