  • Flavours: Most "flavors" are mixtures that product manufacturers purchase and they haven't a clue what's in them. We have learned that methyl salicylate is a very common ingredient, and it is most likely in the vast majority of "flavors". However, the entire flavor component itself is usually very small, and the methyl sal is only a small portion of the that. In our experience, it hasn't proven to be enough to block most people. Salicylates are in flavors, Colours and fragrances in so many products that if they were problematic a great many people would block so we don't concern ourselves with them unless the wording on a product alerts us to a possible abundance of them or they are 'essential oils'. The exception is with any product that stays on the skin (including lips and mouth) too long, i.e. lip products, chewing gums, lozenges (in some cases, mouth rinses) etc. The mint flavours are the most problematic so if anything smells strongly of mint or leaves a tingly feeling, it might be best avoided. If anyone is struggling and not experiencing good days it is a good idea to eliminate anything containing sals in the flavor just in case it contains enough sals to partially block.
  • Flavoxate hydrochloride
  • Flax seed oil (OK as food -- unknown how many capsules can be ingested without blocking. Ground Flaxseed will not block). One of our most Sal-Sensitive members does not block using this oil as a supplement. She takes about a 1/2 tablespoon night and morning (see archives: FMS;SAL: flax seed oil for Pain, 5 Nov 2006). If you want to use any oil as a supplement please use the blocking tests prior to and during treatment.

  • Fragrances/Perfumes/Parfum There is only a small amount of salicylates in perfume, even the expensive ones and thus we say that Perfumes/Colognes/Fragrances are okay (Sal-NegTM). If concerned please use on clothes and avoid skin contact. Rarely does a fragrance in a product contain more than a very small amount of synthetic perfume. Actual plant perfume is too expensive. Fragrances are just that -- a small amount of mixtures we can't (nor need to) identify. It isn't so much that the manufacturers don't want to disclose this info; they purchase the "fragrance" and rarely have a clue of what's in it. Fragrances do not concern us at all, except possibly in some "natural" beauty products. When the fragrance is advertised as serving a purpose, then we do doubt the safety of it (i.e. bath oils, lotions that remain on the skin, etc. that contain essential oils which claim to rejuvenate, relax etc.). Look out for special claims such as 'natural' and contact company for more information.
    • Essential oils are fine in tiny amounts when they are part of the fragrance as long as they are not claimed to be added for medicinal purposes. You would only know that essential oils are part of the fragrance if you called the company and they told you. Essential oils listed separately in the ingredients are not OK. Essential oils are fine in the air. Body sprays often contain plant (fruit) extracts & are applied very liberally and thus are NOT ok. Air Fresheners also often contain plant extracts and although they are fine in the air you need to avoid skin contact. The exception may be anything used topically which smells or tastes strongly of mint. It may mean that there is enough of the mint in there to block some guai'ers.
  • Fructooligosaccharides
  • Fructose
  • Fruit juice concentrate as an ingredient in drinks is fine, eg the grapefruit juice concentrate in Fresca® is so dilute that it is less than the original food concentration and safe to drink without affecting your guai; be aware that grapefruit juice may affect various medications - check with your pharmacist if you have any concerns.

  • Grapefruit seed extract (NOT Grapeseed Extract. There has been a lot of confusion regarding GSE due to blocking reports, however, we have no reports of anyone blocking on a product containing grapefruit seed extract, where there is nothing else in contention. Note it contains methyl-p-hydroxybenzoate thus not a salicylate. We cannot find any information that grapefruit seeds contain sals. However, there has been some difference of opinion which GG members can find in our archives under the subject line: SAL: grapefruit seed extract. Clicking on the link will bring up one significant message but there are several more with the same subject line. Grapefruit Seed should not be confused with Grapefruit itself which contains sals, although there are conflicting reports on the levels. "Grapefruit Extract do contain a purified Diphenol hydroxybenzene complex. This represents two out of the three components of Salicylic acid. The phenol or benzene ring with the hydroxy (OH) group. However it is important to note that the rings are linked and they lack the Carboxyl group that makes an organic acid. These may seem like small differences but they change the function of the compound drastically." Chemist for the company that manufactures Probalance and Probalance Plus.

  • "Poly" could be all alphas, all betas, any combination thereof, etc, and there is no way to know based on the generic labeling of "polyhydroxy acid". The term is sometimes being used to mask a grouping of hydroxy-acids, some of which may very well be salicylates, and it can mean something different in every product. Now, with that said, PHA could also pertain to a specific acid. Gluconolactone is one such example that seems to be very popular in skin care products. Gluconolactone is definitely not a salicylate.

  • Shea Butter (Butyrospermum partii) Low-sal(TM) [Dr. St. Amand says in the Pediatric book: "Pure chemicals extracted from plants, other than salicylate itself, will not block guaifenesin. The process of extraction and purification is accomplished in such a manner as to insure the elimination of all other plant residues. Purified enzymes, fats, or chemicals isolated from plant sources are acceptable for use with guaifenesin. In this category are compounds such as alphahydroxy acids, stearic acid, citric acid, beta-carotene, SHEA and COCOA BUTTER, coconut fatty acids, starches, proteins, glycerides, waxes, gums, and so on." GG Sal consultants wrote to Dr. St. Amand [Dec 4, 2001]: "We have researched as much as we can, but are stumped in understanding what makes shea butter or cocoa butter different from oils extracted from plants (which obviously contain sals). As far as we have been able to ascertain, shea butter (and cocoa butter) is sometimes cold pressed from the nut, and other times chemically extracted with relatively little processing or purification, much as we understand oils to be extracted." Dr. St. Amand replied [Dec 5, 2001]: "Shea butter is a pure fat and is used in tiny amounts usually to help spread things. It is low in salicylates as far as we can tell since not one has yet blocked using it from our patient files. Pine on the other hand is concentrated to get the oil and is applied topically quite different from wheat that is ingested."

  • Soy - Soy is considered negligible in salicylates by those who are sensitive to salicylates. [1 ppm; similar to rice, crabgrass and barley]. Duke lists soybean seed [the part of the plant that is used to make soybean products] as one of the plant species containing the highest amounts of salicylic acid but they do not list how much it contains. Our research indicates 1ppm and from what we can tell this is considered to be a negligible amount. Dr St Amand says soy doesn't block his patients, even though, interestingly, soy is full of flavonoids (Isoflavones).

It is very concentrated but packaged akin to sugar, mixed with maltodextrin, should be fine as well since there is so much maltodextrin there's unlikely to be enough stevia.
