September - November 2022
Located near Rockville, Indiana, Racoon Lake State Recreation Area is on the upper part of Big Raccoon Creek, which makes up Cecil M. Harden Lake. While the area is nicely wooded, many of the campsites are sloping or are short in length.
Our introduction to (Dead) Raccoon Lake State Recreation Area was by the buzzards feasting on a raccoon carcass.
We went exploring in the Jeep and came across many covered bridges. Apparently Parke County is the covered bridge capital of the world and they have a festival in October to celebrate these structures.
Walked the Centennial Trail down to Cecil M. Harden Lake.
The Centennial Trail is a paved trail that goes from the campground store to the lake and has views of mature forest and steep ravines before reaching the lake.
Took the motorcycle out for a ride and saw more covered bridges and found the Thirty Six Saloon for an early dinner.
The Ranch is a cute, quaint cafe featuring a full espresso bar, zesty fare (fun, fresh sandwiches, wraps, paninis, great desserts, and specialty cocktails.
Warren Dunes State Park is located along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and has large sand dunes and lakeshore beaches. This is one of Michigan's most popular state parks with an average of about one million visitors annually. The area is on the Indiana and Michigan border known as MichiAna.
Took the motorcycle for the Morris (theater) 100 festival which was celebrating their 100 year anniversary with a two-day festival in the streets of downtown South Bend.
Sunday, Funday...went to South Haven, MI to Captain Lou's waterfront bar. It was a beautiful day full of people on their last day of being open for the season.
Such a nice for a ride!
The Indian was in good company with the vintage vette.
On the way back from South Haven we stopped by Covert Township Park where there are 63 sites for RVs under 35 feet and a close walk to the Lake Michigan beach area.
Silver Lake State Park is home to 3 miles of stunning Lake Michigan shoreline, a modern campground, nearly 2,000 acres of sand dunes. The campground is on Silver Lake inland from Lake Michigan. There is also a 500-acre Silver Lake State Park ORV Area - the only sand dune riding opportunity east of the Mississippi River.
It was neat to be surrounded by the sand dunes and evergreen forests.
Tucked in the corner (almost) spot 14 had nice views, but the site you really want is 13 (closest to the waterfront).
Sunset to the west of the campground.
On the way back to the campground from an afternoon ride we went by the Little Sable Point Lighthouse.
Morning on Silver Lake with views of the dunes and still water.
The view as the rain crosses over Lake Michigan onto the dunes and coming over Silver Lake.
A 47-acre state park located on the east arm of the Grand Traverse Bay, just 2 miles from downtown Traverse City. The day-use area is located directly across U.S. 31 and features a quarter-mile of sandy beach.
The campground had a lot of spots but do note that this is an urban park with quick access to Traverse City. It is close to the highway, so we changed our site from #59 to #16 to have less road noise.
East Arm Grand Traverse Bay
We took a nice loop around the area including Frankfort (pictured above), Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Leelanau Peninsula, and back to Traverse City for dinner at Firefly (great appetizers).
Leelanau State Park located at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula (north of Traverse City). We scoped out site #27 and would love to stay here some time in the future.
Today was a Jeep day around the Old Mission Peninsula. We visited the Mission Point Lighthouse and drove the winery trail. The lighthouse was on the 45th parallel halfway between the North Pole & Equator.
Peering out from the top of the lighthouse. The stairwell up is very tight and steep and when you get to the top it is made for no more than two people.
Along the wine trail we stopped at Mari Vineyards that had great bay views.
Nothing like enjoying the winery overlooking the bay on a Monday and there were probably 50+ other people with the same idea. Afterwards we headed to The Tasting Room for dinner (delicious food and a lot of craft drinks).
On our inland motorcycle loop of looking at the fall colors a couple, Keith and Jamie, on their UTV invited us down N. Grass Lake Road to see even more fall colors. That was an adventure on the unpaved, sandy road.
Part of the off road adventure.
The park is located 11 miles west of Mackinaw City and sites range from hike-in and rustic, to those featuring electric, full hook up options, and cabins. Unfortunately it was a little rainy and raw (highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s) when we were here.
The Lake shore campgrounds included loop 3 (closed for renovation) and loop 4. This view is from loop 4 and overlooks Big Stone Bay.
Site #511 in the Pines section. We were there during their last weekend open.
We headed out today to see the Tunnel of Trees to see the fall colors. This was near Sturgeon Bay Beach.
Beautiful view of Lake Michigan. The turquoise water is just amazing. (Near Scott Family Nature Preserve)
It was a Saturday and it was really busy on the M-119 Byway to the Tunnel of Trees. The narrow road runs from Cross Village to Harbor Springs and takes you under a leafy ceiling of leaves.
If only the sun was out! These leaves were stunning. Picture taken in between the farms near Pleasant View, MI.
We headed over to Mackinaw City today for lunch at The Hook Lakeside Grill and to view the bridge.
This is a first come, first serve campground with 50 primitive sites right on Lake Michigan.
The view from the RV driving over the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula to the next campground. The bridge is currently the fifth longest suspension bridge in the world at five miles in length. It opened to traffic in 1957.
There are many sites right on the water, this spot was #10, but 45, and 39 look great too for our rig.
Our official first snowfall for 2022. The weather was a little raw for a few days.
Kitty decided it was best to nap in front of the furnace blower, where it was snug and warm.
The walk along the beach was a bit snowy today.
It took a few days to get a sunset shot.
Silent Night is a four site self-contained campground just outside of Munising, MI.
Santa pointed out our campground on St Nicholas Avenue in Christmas, MI.
Overlooking Bay Furnace on a morning walk on the beach.
Donut tree... not really, it's three trees cut away from the powerlines that make it look this way.
It was waterfalls and hiking day. Munising Falls is located in the westernmost portion of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
Wagner Falls Scenic Site is a part of the Michigan State Park system and is just a short hike to the falls.
The Au Train Falls is a set of two drops on the Au Train River – the Upper and Lower falls. The Upper Falls has a drop of about 40 feet and the Lower Falls is 10 feet.
The trailhead up Sugarloaf Mountain is a nice hike where you're rewarded with one of the best views in the Upper Peninsula.
Once you reach the top there is a stunning view of Lake Superior, Marquette, Hogsback Mountain and the large swath of forest between Marquette and Big Bay.
H-58: The Scenic HIghway along the Pictured Rocks Park from Munising to Grand Marais.
There were still fall colors and pine forests to enjoy on this motorcycle ride to Lake Superior Brewing Co.
The Dunes Saloon Lake Superior Brewing Co.
Got to enjoy a flight of beers, cheese dip, and a delicious pizza before heading back to Munising.
Time to head back towards Christmas from Grand Marais.
Not only is Lake Superior's rugged lakeshore beautiful, so is Grand Sable Lake.
When working from the RV, it's always good to have an assistant.
Nestled along the Oconto River, Holtwood Campground is like being on a little peninsula within a small town. We spent a week here just enjoying the little town and hanging around the campground to enjoy the unusually warm weather for this time of year.
As we were looking for our next camp stop, we realized when we pulled up to Holtwood (about 30 min away from Green Bay, WI) that we were here nearly 20 years ago in our other RV.
There are many river front spots and we were on R4 for the last week they were open. This was just a few sites away from where we stayed in 2003.
Lars is harnessing his camp host skills .
It's the 18th year for these camping critters.
Thor is also working on his campground hosting skills.
As part of our trip we like to eat local. Dockside had a menu that goes beyond ordinary pub food. We ended up eating appetizers (calamari, ahi tuna nachos, and bang, bang shrimp) and taking entrees (schnitzel and pulled pork mac n cheese) home to enjoy the next day.
Another local eatery was the River City Diner where you can get a large helping of eggs benedict for breakfast and take some pie for the road. Did someone say pie, it's pie for every taste...look at that list.
More yumminess, Brothers Three had fresh pizza from the dough to the sauce. Try the chicken alfredo pizza and breadsticks.
We took a motorcycle ride up to Door County on the peninsula where it's known for miles of shoreline, lighthouses, state parks, and small coastal towns. We ate lunch (Greystone Castle) in Sturgeon Bay and drove through Algoma and Luxemburg.
This park is the largest and busiest state park in Wisconsin and is about 30 minutes south of the Wisconsin Dells. It encompasses 10,000 acres of both developed recreational experiences and wilderness areas that include unique rock formations.
Devil's Lake facing north. Some say the original Native American name of the lake could have been translated as Spirit Lake, Holy Lake, Mystery Lake, or Sacred Lake.
We hiked up and down the West Bluff trail across to the south shore boardwalk and around the lake back to the Quartzite campground area.
From the north shore looking at the sun getting ready to set behind the Baraboo Bluff Range.
As we continue to head south we stopped in Clinton, Iowa, a Mississippi River town.
The campground was located within Riverview Park, a 65-acre park overlooking the Mississippi River. The park has several features including a marina and restaurant, swimming pool, bike/walk path, showboat theatre and baseball stadium.
Found some well presented sushi at Fujijama.
Dinner with a view of the Mississippi at Candlelight Inn.
This little guy was soaking up the 70+ degrees sunshine by straddling the branch.
The last stop was a visit with friends, Scottie & Brandy of One Pawz Pub. After selling the bar, Friday was the planned last karaoke party so we stopped by to celebrate with them and the local patrons.
As part of the last karaoke night, the "ferris wheel" pizza was brought in from Alfanos.
One Pawz Pub on the corner of main in McNabb, IL.
In most states, a "move over law" is a law which requires motorists to move over and change lanes to give safe clearance to emergency vehicles, utility workers, and in some cases, tow-truck drivers and disabled vehicles.
