The following tribute was given by Jim Dickinson at the Necrology held on April 10, 2011 at the UVA Chapel as part of the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the founding of the Beta Upsilon Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi.

Pete Wynkoop was always the quintessential man to me.

When Pete was 15 his father worked for Sun Oil. He got Pete a summer job working on an ocean going oiler. Pete went to sea nearly every summer thereafter.

After Pete took his degree in history from Virginia he went to Emory law school. His work as an attorney, though fruitful, was apparently not rewarding enough. Pete moved to Florida to take classes in celestial navigation and such. All in an effort to go back to sea.

When he fell ill, Pete got back in touch with several Pi Kapp brothers. Reconnecting with the brothers seemed to give him a sense of belonging again.
