Class of 1976

ALAN MARCUS JACOBUS (1954-1975)

Alan was born in Dallas Texas in 1954. He graduated from Hillcrest High School and matriculated at Virginia in the autumn of 1972 as a member of the class of 1976.

At the time that Alan participated in rush during the fall of 1972, diversity was still a work in progress at the University. Alan is a Jew. It is a testament to the manner that brotherhood is manifested at Beta Upsilon that Alan declined to pledge one of the fine traditionally Jewish fraternities on the Grounds and instead became a Pi Kapp.

While at U.Va., Alan had a productive career. He served in several positions in the house. He was a committed volunteer at the Madison Hall Office of Volunteer Community Services. In that capacity he gratified his love of baseball by serving as a youth league coach. At the conclusion of his third year, Alan was elected as the president-elect of the Inter-Fraternity Council.

In such spare time as a student has, Alan was a Civil War buff and even spent one summer as a volunteer at the Bull Run battlefield park in Manassas. At lunch at the house one day, Alan proudly displayed his National Park Service “Smoky the Bear” hat.

Alan also enjoyed the out of doors and climbing. Tragically during the summer preceding his fourth year, Alan was hiking alone along a razor back ridge near Estes Park, Colorado and sustained a fall which took his life.

In addition to being revered in the hearts and memories of his Pi Kapp brothers, a memorial tree in his honor has been planted at Madison Hall and the Beta Upsilon chapter’s community service award has been named in Alan’s honor.
