Theodore E. "Ted" Kapala RD2

(1956-1957)

Ted reported aboard the Spangler on July 4, 1956 as a Radarman 3rd class, rising to rank of Radarman 2nd class prior to his discharge in 1957. Recollection has it that he transfered aboard from the USS Banbridge CGN-25. In addition to his radarman duties he was soon assigned additional duties as the ship's postal clerk. He had the enviable task in this regard of going ashore on mail runs in ports the rest of us could only look at and dream about.

Ted remained in the Naval Reserve following his discharge, accumulating 30 years of service before retiring in 1987 as a Chief Petty Officer. He also served for a coouple of years in the Peace Corps in Equador and on returning home went to work for the U. S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Brockton, MA, until he reached retirement age.

He attended his first Spangler Reunion in 2005 in Laughlin, NV and was with us again in Myrtle Beach, SC in 2006, and in Branson, Mo in 2008.

Ted passed away at age 77 on December 21, 2012 following a lengthy bout with cancer. He is buried at Calvary Cemetery in Brockton, MA.
