The 2014 USS Spangler Reunion was held September 18 & 19 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Charleston, SC. James and Nelda Sims served as host and did a wonderful job of making sure the facilities and transportation needs were well taken care of, including providing an ample supply of cookies, cakes, dips, cheeses, beers and mixed drinks.

Eighteen spanglermates, wives and guest were present, in all. A list of attendees is available at the bottom of this page. Charleston with it's history, beauty and award-winning restaurants offered a wonderful setting for this years reunion.

The welcoming breakfast on Monday morning began with Dave Norris giving the opening prayer, followed by Pledge Allegiance, introductions and concluded with an excellent breakfast. This was followed by a business meeting. Dave offered to hold one final reunion, at about the same time, next year in San Diego.

Highlights of the reunion included a group dinner at the Lands End Restuarant on the water front, with a Carnival Cruise Ship sitting alongside the dock as an added scenic attraction. Included in the outting was a tour of the historical district, a visit to the historical Exchange and Provost Building, built in the late 1700's, a stop at the Historical Old Market in downtown Charleston, a tour of the Fort Sumpter National Monument, and a visit to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center to view the Confederate Navy Submarine, the H. L. Huntly, sunk in Charleston's outer harbor in 1864 and located in 1995 and recovered in 2000. Also included on the tour was visit to the White Point Garden, a beautiful historic waterfront park.

A banquet dinner immediately followed the tour. Dave Norris led the group in prayer and Jim Duncan was invited to address the group for a few minutes on his activities in directing a tv show on retirement groups.
